Windows 10 Worst Secret Spins Out Of Control - Forbes

Back in November Microsoft confirmed Windows 10’s worst kept secret: its extensive telemetry (or ‘spying’ as it has been labelled) cannot be stopped. What no-one realised until now, however, is just how staggering the extent of this tracking really is…

Blowing the lid on it this week is Voat user CheesusCrust whose extensive investigation found

*Windows 10 contacts Microsoft to report data thousands of times per day.

And the kicker?

*This happens after choosing a custom Windows 10 installation and disabling all three pages of tracking options which are all enabled by default.*...

Microsoft has yet again proved what an untrustworthy company it is. It has forced it's users onto a Windows platform that continually exfiltrates user data without a choice or means of disabling that feature. Revolting...

So if someone hacks into my system and does harm, I can sue microsoft because they left a hole open to be taken advantage of.

I’m really thinking of taking my company to linux.

Even after we turn the monitoring off Microsoft turns it back on. Same with updates.

But... ownership of physical assets (computer) is not a feature.

Once you log onto the interwebz, Microsoft becomes the true owner of your PC.

They want to know your every move for personal financial advantage which IMO should and could be very legal.

I have mixed feelings about this, between “meh,” and “FUMS!”

FCC rules state that the device is subject to outside influences...just like your FM radio.
There is a disclaimer on the MFR tag.

Supposedly its to facilitate Windows Updates.

But you can no longer hide or postpone Windows updates. They occur automatically.

If an update should bork Windows, that’s a feature, not a fault.

Windows 10 does everything Microsoft has wanted your computer to do - that you don’ know about.

I’ll let the judge decide that.

As it stands, banks, etc.. are responsible for providing some level of adequate protection of customer data.

As such, if user data is compromised, the entity can be held responsible if they did not take adequate precautions.

Like most class action type suits, even without absolute proof of wrongdoing, settlements are reached.

Why anyone would buy a computer that’s tied to that bastard Bill Gates is beyond me. Especially when Mac’s are readily available. But then there are those who like older British cars despite the fact that you have to have at least two of them to be sure that you will be able to go when you need to.

This might really damage, in not destroy the desktop PC market.

And, then you have the question of proprietary ownership.
You own the box but MS owns the software. Sorry Charlie.

Meh...even the Linux Project owns their OS/software systems; we use them according to their operational agreement.

Voat was debunked on other threads. It was Windows Update trying different IPs because he hacked his DD-WRT router.

Not that Win10 isn’t intrusive with its telemetry defaults (it is), but you can indeed turn them off.

Perhaps it ahould be made easier, but otherwise the Forbes article is just repeating Voat’s already disproven claim.

Oh, and you can disable Windows Update in the Control Panel for Services too. Takes about 10 seconds.

And when you sign up w/a bank, included are clauses absolving them of liability in the event of a breach.

Hasn’t helped them any, except to deter those who accept such statements at face value...

“Once you log onto the interwebz, Microsoft becomes the true owner of your PC.”

You own your PC, but you only have a “license” to use the OS. A very sneaky way of doing business, IMO.

Some yrs ago I needed a new laptop so went to Costco

They had ONE laptop displayed, that’s it.

I asked a sales guy what’s up?

He said they are waiting fot the new ones to come in with Vista operating system.

I bought the lone display laptop at a good discount and it had XP on it.

So glad I never experienced Vista as it got VERY bad reviews.

Years later I was in need again for a laptop.

Went to Costco and got a good one with Windows 7 on it. Works fine

When Win 10 came out, all I heard was that it was the epitome of invasiveness and would spy on you without you being able to prevent it.

Now every few days my puter does a pop up offering me Win 10 for free.

Well duh, why not give it away-it will bring them many returns worth more $ then they would make by charging for it.

Why kid ourselves though, if yer on the www in any form yer naked from yer toes to your hat

Heck, cover yer camera lenz and turn off your mic and they can turn you screen into a camera lenz.

I used to have onstar on a vehicle and I heard the the gov could listen to your convos throught he OS mic.

“Especially when Mac’s are readily available. “

because MACs are impossible in an organization which has to show compliance.
