The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
We are hovering right at 31 degrees, and the snow is still on the ground from earlier this week. School let out early on Monday and remained closed all week. We also had a short power outage, which brought on talk of putting in a standby generator, instead of the portable generator that we have for Hubby's business when he has to use occasionally at night.
I didn't get around to covering the garlic with row covers, so I hope the mulch suffices. We are supposed to get some warming up this weekend. My sympathies are with everyone who is gearing up for the monster storm, and hope all do okay in getting through it.
Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
Snowing & blowing here since 10 a.m. .... we should be getting 12-24”. Ugh.
Not on the list but ordering seeds..
May be an early spring in Atlanta as summer weeds are everywhere..
Okra, tomatoes, cukes, and beans. NOTHING MORE THIS SEASON..
Ha!
Patience called earlier this morning and Johnny will likely not live through today. I have written a Eulogy of his life today and will post it on FR when he passes. When I do, I will ping you to it so you can ping the gardening thread list to it.

So sad to hear. Thanks for all you have done for Johnny and to keep us all updated.
Ugh is right. We have only had one instance where we got snow of 21” and that was in the early 1980s. It appears that this storm will be East and South of us. Praise Be!
Can’t complain-it’s been pretty moderate for Missouri. Heating bill is 30% under last year’s Jan. use. Still, the older I get, the colder I get, and the more my bones ache in the winter.
Have been experiencing quite a lot of hip pain the last 2 days, so am going to have to avoid laying on that side for a while-that usually helps to clear it up. Might need to get a new mattress - have been thinking that might help.
He will be missed. So sorry to hear this.
Welcome not on the list. You can be added if you like. Tomatoes cukes and beans are some of my favorites. Taters is another.
Just got in from a quick trip outside. The lawn tractor is under a shed roof & the snow is blowing so bad, that it was getting under the roof and several inches deep on the tractor already. I got my last tarp from the garden & got as much snow off the tractor as I could, then covered it & tried to weigh down the edges so it won’t blow off .... fingers crossed.
I think there is sleet mixed in with the snow. I’d say we have 4-6 inches on the ground already. I have knee high boots with neoprene tops from Southern States .... big splurge at the time I bought them, but I am really glad to have them now.
Hope your hip feels better ... cold doesn’t help anyone’s “older” bones either (mine included).
While very sad to hear this I have been blessed with Johnny’s friendship for the past years, as you are, too.
Thx, M
Just read your post. I felt compelled to recite Prayers for the Dying for our Johnny earlier. Thanks for all who are surrounding our quirky, funny, talented, FRiend with love and prayers as he steps into Eternity. It will certainly be our loss when he leaves us.
I am so very sorry to read this.
It’s hard for me in Central TX to imagine what you, and those in the storm must be going through. Prayers for warmth, safety, no power outages, and no slips or falls outside for all affected by the weather.
Thank you for keeping us updated. Johnny has been very special.
Oh, my. Prayers and hugs.
I have a cousin in Houston .... the “dirty dog” (not really, I do love him) went golfing in 70 degree weather the other day! :-)
Thanks for the prayers .... got a lot going on in the family healthwise & if anyone needs a trip to the hospital in a hurry in these conditions, it’s going to be tough. I’m not sure the rescue squad could make it down our very rural road - they are saying you need 4-wheel drive for the interstate road around here. So far so good.
JRandomFreeper, Johnny, died at 4:33 pm, today, January 22, 2015.
I will post a Eulogy for Johnny on FR for his friends to read and have Greeneyes ping you to that.
