Internet Explorer 11 is the only version of the browser Microsoft wants most Windows users to run.
Microsoft recently announced another step that puts Internet Explorer that much closer to oblivion. Beginning next Tuesday, January 12, Microsoft will officially retire Internet Explorer versions 8, 9, and 10 for most Windows operating systems, according to a Microsoft support page.
Internet Explorer 11 will be the only officially supported version of the browser for Windows 7, 8.1, and 10.
The only exception will be Windows Vista users, who will stick with Internet Explorer 9. Vista's mainstream support ended more than a year before IE11 rolled out. The unpopular OS is almost up for retirement anyway. It reaches the end of its extended support phase in April 2017. After that, Vista will be unsupported just like Windows XP.
Anyone running a Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 system has nothing to worry about, as both of those systems came with IE11 preinstalled. Windows 7 users who don't have automatic updates enabled, however, may not be running the latest version of IE.
During "Patch Tuesday" on January 12, Microsoft will roll out an update for Windows 7 that prompts non-IE11 users to upgrade their built-in browser. If you insist on sticking with an older version of IE, there's a registry hack to disable notifications. You can find more information on Microsoft's support pages.
Users still on Windows 8, meanwhile, won't receive updates of any kind, as Microsoft only supports PCs that upgraded to Windows 8.1.

OTH, Edge super sucks.
IE 11 is about as good as IE could ever get, in most regards. Now we wait for Edge to take over...
Give it time. It's real raw. Let's hope it gets good before Microsoft's hocus-pocus focus groups screw it up.
However, I think it is now more accurate to divide things into those we pay for once and those we pay for over and over again. So things like utilities, phone service, and now computer products come under the heading "things we pay for over and over again".
I believe that business is moving toward a model where fewer and fewer things are "pay for once" and more and more things are "pay for over and over again". Even things referred to as 'durable goods' are often not quite so durable and need to be replaced since repairing them is as expensive or more than replacing.
We are being turned into endless revenue streams.
Nice!!
while many are dumping firefox and now searching
what is explorer
We always were. It's just that in the past, because things didn't break or go obsolete so quickly, there were peaks and troughs in the consuming revenue function. A lot of things lasted for decades. What a concept.
Now it's kinda averaged out, the function is smoother. The Maytag repairman died long ago, replaced by the delivery boy who brings you a new appliance each year or two.
Spot on! Few people realize that they are being played.
Few people like you see the scam for what it is.
I’ve gotta admit I like the Edge.
As usual, I find Edge works when Google Chrome breaks on me. Chrome's been finicky lately.

(Caution, don't view while eating dinner, LOL)
I have Vista on my home machine and had to abandon IE for Chrome because YouTube and other media rich sites would not render properly on IE9
It sure does.
The same team that wrote IE blowware now writes Edge blowware.
In fact, much of the IE’s core code ***remains*** in Edge.
Gonna be great once it “matures” (Lucy, football, Charlie Brown).
MS is always dumping support for old versions of whatever.
Ruh Roh, since I’m still on XP, what will I do without Internet Explorer?
“We are being turned into endless revenue streams.”
I will make my final move to Linux this summer. No more boat anchor systems for me.
This announcement doesn't take away whatever you're using. It just means that those versions are no longer supported or available for upgrading. Since XP hasn't been supported for a long while, this is of little consequence to you -- they already hung you out to dry, so to speak.
So your chances of upgrading your version of IE are essentially nil. What version of IE are you using now? Hope you like what you've got... :-)
