Large dogs are held in high esteem for a variety of reasons: for their large stature, their strength, and their protective nature and keen watchdog abilities. If you're looking for a reliable canine defender, it's important to consider not only the physical attributes of a dog breed, but its temperament, as well.
Using data from Animal Planet, PetBreeds found the 29 best guard dogs and ranked them by popularity, according to the 2014 AKC popularity rankings. (Three dog breeds that had no ranking were put at the bottom of the list.) Criteria used included that the breed must possess a strong watchdog ability and be known protectors. Only purebreds that were classified as being large or giant and to bark minimally were included.

Labs are wonderful dogs as well. Handsome, and very sweet. I watched a “Dog Whisperer” show today about a yellow Lab by the name of Gavin, whose owner was concerned about him becoming fearful after being being first under fire in Iraq and then going through some strong hurricanes in Florida. What a dog! He was just amazing. My husband and I have discussed adopting a Lab many times over the years.

Now that sounds doable. :)
Yes, they are, and their owners adore them.
Dachshunds are great dogs, and also of the hound group.
#4 - Australian Shepherd
HUH?
They are great, smart dogs, but they are only medium sized and they are build more for stamina as opposed to strength and they are not ferocious at all. They don’t belong on this list.
The Australian Cattle Dog on the other hand, yes. I think the author got confused.
The problem is that they limited it to AKC breeds.
I personally never turned my back on either of them as I did not trust them a lick.
Maybe if I had raised them from pups it would have been different.
I’m an ideas guy. It’s what I do ;)
I like pits and rotts
Dog food is expensive...every little bit helps. :)
However I have been told that in the US such shenanigans are frowned on.
A good guard dog keeps the bad guys away. So this seems misplaced: “to bark minimally”.

Not ferocious? Ha! My Aussies don't fit your description. That breed is versatile and can do many jobs. They are each 45 pounds of pure guardian attitude. They are alert to every noise and they make sure I know. I almost pity the fool that ever breaks into my house - those dogs will do some real damage. You know the saying, it is not the size of the dog, but the fight in the dog.
Well that’s why you encourage Porcupines to come around.
No bones, no crime.
LOL
j/k
Maybe.
;D
Not a good choice for here in S.E. Michigan. They're too often stolen out of their yards and used by fishermen who troll for muskies.................
Personally, I can't argue against the practice since I've hooked some monsters using Chihuahuas...........
If the Dobes hear someone outside, they’ll bark to warn them to not come inside.
If they catch someone outside, the creep will never hear them coming.
It’s just how they’re built.
Depends on the breed.
There’s alert dogs, alarm dogs and then there’s dogs like Dobes.
Depends on your desired outcome.
Macy’s used to turn loose a pack of Dobes in their store overnight.
They were never robbed, during that time.

Our Maltese sleeps on the foot of our bed facing out. She misses nothing. She is fearless and has no idea she weighs only 8 pounds.
She won’t stop anyone using brute force, but they’ll know they are under attack and have their hands full while I chamber a round.
