Large dogs are held in high esteem for a variety of reasons: for their large stature, their strength, and their protective nature and keen watchdog abilities. If you're looking for a reliable canine defender, it's important to consider not only the physical attributes of a dog breed, but its temperament, as well.
Using data from Animal Planet, PetBreeds found the 29 best guard dogs and ranked them by popularity, according to the 2014 AKC popularity rankings. (Three dog breeds that had no ranking were put at the bottom of the list.) Criteria used included that the breed must possess a strong watchdog ability and be known protectors. Only purebreds that were classified as being large or giant and to bark minimally were included.

Now you just need a Marshall instead of that Roland modeling amp and you’re golden ;)
Not that I have anything against Roland. I have an Integra 7, a couple Midi controllers and a ton of Boss pedals in the corner ;)
My daughter has a Ridgeback. Awesome dog. Quite intelligent and an extremely well honed sense of cause & effect.
Poster boy for anthropomorphism. Now & then I almost have to wonder what he’s thinking.
A poodle killed a burglar a few years ago. Accidentally punctured his juggler vein. Only one bite. Court dismissed wrongful death brought by burglar’s family. Judge laughed at them.
Ridgebacks were bred to hunt lions. Think about it.
That’s my husband’s. I can’t play anything, I’m sorry to say. :)
It’s Christmas. Every husband deserves a JCM800 for Christmas ;)
Comes as no surprise, there seems to be no hound breeds as they are not particularly territorial dogs. To them the entire world is their territory, they are roamers. Hounds are all about the hunt.
They’re great dogs. Affectionate, intelligent, funny and sweet. Frankie (the larger one in the pic), is an excellent watch dog. His hearing is amazing, and he has a very deep bark. He also likes to howl, which I love. :)
LOL! I’ll keep that in mind. :)
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are hounds.
Well if you REALLY loved Hubby you’d get him a Bogner...
It is a strange bred, both territorial and good hunters. Awesome dogs. That no nonsense face and taught body. I wish I had a couple.
My lab has a fantastic guard dog bark. He also has a whiny, spoiled brat, shrill bark when he is not getting his way. He is very vocally versatile.
LOL!
Ah yes the Lab, the clown dog bred. I have two of them. They are pretty good guard dogs also.
Or a Dumble. Might need to sell a kidney though. Probably both. Just find a liberal and sell theirs. ;)
A Belgian Malinois who’s little buddy is a Chihuahua. Best defense combo yet around.
A couple of years ago, my aunt in her 70s had her little mutt go nuts at 10PM in December. She grabbed her revolver and went to the door. A guy in a ski mask was trying to force entry. She told him to go or die, and he chose to go.
The cops told her a guy with that MO had been breaking in, beating old people and robbing them. So I guess that little mongrel dog, all 10 lbs of him, was a fine guard dog that night!
Dachshund. Supremely loyal to you and yours, ever-vigilant about the house, AND packs a whole lot of loud barking in that long little package.
