Using fMRI, the researchers saw that men in the study took several shortcuts, oriented themselves more using cardinal directions and used a different part of the brain than the women in the study.
But when women got a drop of testosterone under their tongue, several of them were able to orient themselves better in the four cardinal directions.

The ONLY times I ever got lost while driving or hunting was when cloud cover blocked the sun.
This only makes sense. Humans have spent the vast majority of our existence as hunter-gathers. The men hunted game while the women gathered plant-based food. In the heat of the chase men didn’t have time to orient their positions by landmarks, they had to depend on an inner sense of direction—where the sun is in the sky, etc. Women could walk—they’d have to, since they had kids in tow and plenty of time to note rocks, odd trees, etc.
I don’t trust GPS, I always go on Google Map the night before and plot out the route.
When I’m on the move I’m constantly recalculating N,S,E,and west. If its a clear night I always look for the north star. I watch where the sun comes up and sets throughout the year.
I can get turned around on dark nights or dimly lit overcast days but there are other cues. Walking in the state land one day I thought I was headed dead north and came out at the road dead south. I turned around and headed back north. Fortunately they started shooting at the shooting range and I kept it to my left and I let it move off to the rear left and came out at the north road less than an 8th of a mile from the truck.
I had an ex-girlfriend who’d get lost getting out of her own driveway.
I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth
The north side of my town faced east
And the east was facing south....
GPS is really good for identifying location. Automated GPS navigation is only as good as the mapping database in your device.
The first time I went to Dallas, Texas was at night. What I thought was north turned out not to be. Not long after, I moved there, and my sense of direction stayed off for years in the city. That first impression got hard wired and I couldn’t get rid of it.
Virtually anywhere in the world, any time of the year, if I can see the sun (and usually when I can’t see the sun), I can guess the time within 10 minutes.
I grew up in the woods.
McDonalds and Cracker Barrel.
I have found that most women are not good at north, south, east, west, and they are not good at reading maps. They have to rely on landmarks, left, right, and GPS.
Yep. Dallas get me lost sometimes too. And I’m a frequent (2-3 times per year) visitor.
That’s true but its become increasingly true of everyone under say, age 30 regardless of sex. I have tried to get this information when calling to ask what side of a street a business is on (N,E,S or W) and invariably the young person answering the phone has no idea and even acts indignant at the question.
Her: I am so lost.
Him: Let me put a little testosterone under your tongue.
WHAP
Him: Don’t hit me no more!
You and me both. I'm a paper-map guy.
If you tell me where Cabela’s, the Alibi Tavern and the nearest strip club are, I can find the dog you lost last week.
And they read maps a heck of a lot better..... but who needs a study to figure that out?
Speaking of tongues, I'm biting mine right now...and won't post any smutty remark here....
GPS will often take you on a ridiculous route. It is better to use it as a last resort if you are lost and just need to get home.
I like to know where I am in relation to the larger area, like the whole city or whole county if in a rural area, and GPS doesn’t provide this information.
My point is that she didn't catch it either.
