I don’t trust GPS, I always go on Google Map the night before and plot out the route.
GPS is really good for identifying location. Automated GPS navigation is only as good as the mapping database in your device.

GPS will often take you on a ridiculous route. It is better to use it as a last resort if you are lost and just need to get home.
I like to know where I am in relation to the larger area, like the whole city or whole county if in a rural area, and GPS doesn’t provide this information.
That's what I do. I have no trouble with map reading or directions.
I used to orient myself according to landmarks (i.e. "right at the Wawa"), but when you do most of your driving through the woods with Wawas popping up here and there, every road looks alike, and you're forced to pay attention to route numbers and street names as a matter of survival.
That’s what the DH does, too. He even does it for me if I am preparing to drive somewhere new.
