The US economy is turning into a nightmare for recruiters: They just can't find enough qualified people to fill jobs.
In a recent note to clients, Macquarie Research analyst David Doyle cited a survey of HR executives conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) suggesting that firms are having an increasingly difficult time recruiting workers and filling positions.
Both the manufacturing and the services sectors are having a harder time recruiting people today than they did during the credit bubble in the mid-2000s. HR folks are particularly struggling in the services sector, which follows the larger trend of the US services sector outperforming US manufacturing as of late.
As Doyle points out, the net share of services firms that are reporting difficulty is almost triple that of 2005-2007's average, which can be seen in the chart below.
This is a high-quality problem in that it's the result of an improving economy in which the unemployment rate is collapsing and all of the qualified labor available to work is now working.
For quite some time now, small businesses have been pointing out the difficulty in attracting qualified workers.

So even the illegal immigrants won’t accept their crappy wages anymore. They’ve learned they make more on welfare.
I’ve heard similar before and it blows my mind.
I had a horrible experience training so called chartered accountants from India. One actually asked me why the December beginning balance was the same as the November ending balance. In the end, it took over 80 Indians to replace 35 American/British accountants, and they never could produce results as accurate or as fast as we could.

$12.00@hr after ninety day probationary period.
No, this isn’t a real ad, but they’re getting that ridiculous.
I saw a real one the other day that required a degree for data entry and order taking.
Ridiculous.
And you are better off if you train an eager person than you are hiring a know it all who will shortly be telling you how to run your business.
All propaganda!
Not enough liberal diversity hires worth hiring out there for sure.
NWO nonsense!
I've been noticing this too. I was looking at the FedGovs jobs list the other day, and to do the job I am currently doing, they are paying, on average, 1/3 more than I am making in private sector. Yet, they are requiring a masters degree. To do exactly what I have been doing for 10+ years without a masters degree. It did not used to be this way 5+ years ago.
The worst part is the masters need not even be in a related field.
I know of one person with almost a decade in the actual job that was told that had they not had a masters, they would have been replaced from the job they had been doing.
ANY masters. A degree in black lesbian studies would have qualified that person straight out of college over their actual work experience ON THAT JOB.
By qualified they mean someone with a graduate degree, ten years of experience, and willing to work for $5 an hour 80 hours a week under incompetent management.
That's not far from the truth. They'll tell you they're highly specialized folks unlike what's in the U.S.
And they come into the office and can’t even file properly for crying out loud.
It's one of two things....they hire morons...or they hire good people that won't work under the conditions of the job.
Talk about a catch 22....
I think there's another factor here that isn't mentioned. After the bloodbath of mass layoffs in 2008-2011, a lot of professionals have become very gun-shy about leaving an established position to pursue a new opportunity.
I'm seeing a lot of this in my industry.
I know a guy who was told by his supervisor that if he went to night school and got his MA, he would be promoted. So he did, and even with the co footing part of the tuition, he's in the red for $60k. And then they laid him off and replaced him with two Hindus.
Part is a spin off of the nonsense going on at Yale/Mizzou.
We hired a millenial within the past year. On paper, this person is exceptionally well qualified. Real CV, from real places. Did all the due diligence. Interviews went well. Smart person.
Having spent the past year training, counselling, remediating, this person is on the cusp of being fired. Has a zillion excuses why he can’t measure up. Stuff like, “we had a baby last year.” or “My wife works, and .....” and “my in-laws are moving to town, and we have to.....”. As if these events had never happened to anyone in the history of mankind. This for a job with an obscene amount of paid vacation.
At the end of the day, he will not make the effort necessary to do things correctly.
The real bummer is that we are going to be back in recruitment/hiring mode.....for another millenial, most likely.
Btw, I love that shot...
I spoke with one of those folks long ago. Never again. I must have said “What” 40 times. It was like being spoofed...lol
Yet, they are requiring a masters degree.
credential creep. Happening in all fields.
Physical therapist and occupational therapist are now needing doctorates/
In 20 years all nurses will be nurse practitioners and non nurse practitioners will be equivalent to LPNS.
Every state job here requires a law degree because we have a law school that cannot place its lawyers.
small businesses have been pointing out the difficulty in attracting qualified workers.”
There is a huge lack of young people who can spell without the benefit of spellcheck for even simple words, compute 20% of $100 without a calculator, write a decent letter or know how to respond to an email in a professional manner using complete words and correct punctuation.
Interviewed three young ladies in their 20’s this week, all with college degrees, all currently unemployed for an entry level position in a doctor’s office. Two of the three sent the doctor a text message “TY for the time”. Third one did send a thank you letter to the doctor but spelled his name incorrectly. Seems like there is no training or education in basic life skills.
When a liberal guy majors in feminist lit, they’re aren’t too many jobs for which he is qualified.
Not surprising - the current unemployable rate seems to be about 47%.
