The US economy is turning into a nightmare for recruiters: They just can't find enough qualified people to fill jobs.

In a recent note to clients, Macquarie Research analyst David Doyle cited a survey of HR executives conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) suggesting that firms are having an increasingly difficult time recruiting workers and filling positions.

Both the manufacturing and the services sectors are having a harder time recruiting people today than they did during the credit bubble in the mid-2000s. HR folks are particularly struggling in the services sector, which follows the larger trend of the US services sector outperforming US manufacturing as of late.

As Doyle points out, the net share of services firms that are reporting difficulty is almost triple that of 2005-2007's average, which can be seen in the chart below.

This is a high-quality problem in that it's the result of an improving economy in which the unemployment rate is collapsing and all of the qualified labor available to work is now working.

For quite some time now, small businesses have been pointing out the difficulty in attracting qualified workers.

350 million people and a dearth of qualified workers?

Well, I guess we should throw open the borders then.

I guess they’ll have to offer higher wages. Then the workers they need will magically appear.

That’s funny, all those years that I applied for positions trying to save my house and these bastards used to tell me “you’re overqualified” . I used to say I will take the job and goof off more!

and that’s why they keep laying off experienced, highly trained and skilled American workers who are required to train their “qualified” replacements.

Well perhaps it is time to do what businesses have done from time immemorial, start training programs.

And if you don’t treat your workers like used tissues, they may stay with you.

I’m doing what I can. I’ve helped dozens of my stepson’s friends how to fix everything from engines to making craters from Mom’s kitchen and laundry chemicals.

At least we all here will go down with the last shot of survival.

The keyword is “Qualified”.

Maybe this is this the employer’s way of saying “I can’t find someone willing to work at the money I am willing to pay”

I would imagine, out of the unemployed, some would be willing to take the wages being offered to at least get off unemployment, if they’re even on unemployment any longer. If the unemployment is too appealing, then let’s cut that either lower or shorter timeframe and I’d bet there would be more applicants.

What they fail to mention is how many of these poor hurting companies require masters degrees for jobs that a mere 10 years ago were available to mere bachelors or to HS grads with a functional skill set.

The scam is in making your qualifications impossible to meet unless A list talent will take D list wages.

Woe is us! no Americans can meet our requirements!!!!
