Explanation: What happens when two black holes collide? This extreme scenario likely occurs in the centers of some merging galaxies and multiple star systems. The featured video shows a computer animation of the final stages of such a merger, while highlighting the gravitational lensing effects that would appear on a background starfield. The black regions indicate the event horizons of the dynamic duo, while a surrounding ring of shifting background stars indicates the position of their combined Einstein ring. All background stars not only have images visible outside of this Einstein ring, but also have one or more companion images visible on the inside. Eventually the two black holes coalesce. The end stages of such a merger may provide a strong and predictable blast of gravitational radiation, a much sought after form of radiation different than light that has never yet been directly observed.

An event horizon is basically the distance from the center of a black hole at which the escape velocity (the speed needed for something to break free from the gravitational field) exceeds the speed of light. The more mass a black hole contains, the further its event horizon extends into space. All massive objects have a specific escape velocity. For example, for Earth it’s about 18,000 miles/hr.

They really had me until the words “computer animation”. Yes, gullible me. I thought that perhaps Hubble or one of the other instruments had finally enabled us to SEE a black hole. Nobody has ever actually SEEN a black hole, have they? It’s just a theory or a concept, isn’t it? I’d seriously like to know.
And then I realized (computer animation) that this was right up there with R2D2, and Yoda, and computer models for climate change; which the Australian computer engineer who recently deconstructed the code being used in the climate change models, found that they had CO2 factored in at 10 times its actual existance in the atmosphere. They’re playing us in every direction. IMHO.

This appeared probably a century or more before Einstein's first paper on relativity.
