BOSTON (CBS) Youve heard of taking probiotics for a healthy gut, but what about literally spraying live bacteria on your skin? As Dr. Mallika Marshall reports, a local company thinks its a good idea for overall health, and plans to prove it.
I have not taken a shower in over 12 years, says Dave Whitlock, a chemical engineer and MIT grad who says he doesnt miss bathing at all. No one did clinical trials on people taking showers every day. So whats the basis for assuming that that is a healthy practice.
In fact, what Whitlock does believe is healthy is restoring good bacteria to our skin that our ancestors enjoyed long ago and that has slowly been stripped away by excessive cleaning. To prove his theory, he helped found AOBiome, a company based in Cambridge, MA.
Weve confused clean with sterile, says Jasmina Aganovic, the General Manager of Consumer Products at AOBiome. She says as humans, we need to reconnect with our environment. Weve taken the dirt out of our lives. We dont spend as much time outdoors as we used to, even little children, she explains.
To add a little dirt back into our lives, AOBiome has created Mother Dirt, specifically the AO+ Mist containing live bacteria that is sprayed directly on the skin twice a day. It has no odor and feels like water.
Our users are able to reduce their dependence on conventional products, says Aganovic. Examples include cutting out or cutting down on deodorant, cutting out or cutting down on moisturizers. Theres a Mother Dirt shampoo and cleanser that dont contain bacteria but Aganovic says wont interfere with it either.
And while Whitlock still doesnt shower, he does use Mother Dirt every day and hopes the rest of the world will join him. I would like a billion people a day to use this, he says.
While AOBiome believes in the health benefits of these live bacteria, theyre not making any scientific claims right now but will soon begin clinical trials on inflammatory skin conditions, like acne.
The Mother Dirt products became available in July of this year. For more information, go to www.motherdirt.com

LOL!
This was the Course that taught me all about global cooling, the population bomb, the limits to growth, the positives regarding the Club of Rome predictions, and a boatload of other crap.
These people are mental cases and properly belong in a state institution but not one ostensibly described to be involved with ‘higher learning.’
They are all crazy.
Same people who say we’re running out of water............................
You could try a Wild Yam cream. It has estrogen precursors in it. ;^)
Yeah, looks like Wilford Brimley in John Carpenter’s The Thing.
Definitely don’t let this guy spray bacteria on you.
Actually he looks like that guy from The Goonies....”Baby Ruth!”
Perhaps the nose knows?
Take soil-based organisms for gut health, too. Your intestines are the home base for your immune system, and the friendly bacteria in SBO’s help it to stay healthy.
If you want to eliminate body odor, take zinc regularly. Just follow the instructions on the bottle.
I don’t know much about friendly bacteria but the best deodorant I’ve ever seen is ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Mix some ascorbic acid or sodium ascorbate powder with water snd apply to wherever you sweat. Works great.
He may smell ok, but I’m not sure next to him would be the first seat I’d choose on a moderately full bus.
Baking soda is also great deo. Salt water bath or shower, ditto.
It may work for a professor. It will not work for people who farm or work construction or in a steel mill. You encounter things in your work day that just need to washed off for the sake of your health.
“I have not taken a shower in over 12 years,”
So, apparently he’s also never done a job in 12 years where he got dirty, greasy or was covered with grime or dust? The ultimate girly man, apparently.
Okay, I’m gonna go shower now.

I always like to talk to redheads. What soil based organisms are you talking about? Yam, sweet potatoes shrooms and such or something else?
The recent push for legalizing unpasteurized milk is because of the great benefit seen in the good bacteria in the milk that’s killed by pasteurization.
