Some medical advice from Freepers is sorely needed.
About two weeks ago I twisted my lower back and the result sciatica. I have been taking 3 200mg of Advil and 2 300 mg Tylenol every six hours plus alternating between an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) and a hot water bottle. I have also been doing some exercises several times a day as recommended by my physical therapist. So here it is Saturday evening and I am in a lot of pain. What is so discouraging was today at about 2 pm for a couple of hours, I was pain free. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
The nerve pain induced by ruptured discs is indescribable. My neurologist told me that unless you have experienced it you can not appreciate just how debilitating the pain alone is. He had experienced it and that made him a better Dr. Great surgeon from Yale and a good man.
You’re probably dehydrated. Your discs fill with water, when there’s not enough, there’s pain. So try lots of water, and then lean forward, bracing yourself with your hands on a chair, and feel the discs “inflate” while you hold a very gentle forward stretch.
Also to reduce inflammation, try a half teaspoon of baking soda mixed with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water a few times a day. Ease off on the coffee, cola and tea, caffeine is dehydrating and those drinks are acidifying. Acid = inflammation.
Heard from a friend today that someone she knew had a really bad lower back pain. Dr. made him take his wallet out of his back pocket. Said sitting on that wallet throws everything off alignment.
Book: Dr John Sarno “healing back pain”
A shot of steroids from your Doctor would fix it. Then go for some physical therapy to strengthen back.
Go to WalMart Get Vitamin B-12 sublinguals, 5000 unit size. Put one under your tongue and let it dissolve. Takes a few seconds. If you get no relief take two the next day. B-12 is the doctor prescribed treatment but the doctor wants to bring you in for shots probably twice a week. You don’t need shots of B-12. Experiment with the sublinguals for dosage. My daughter uses them for her sciatica. So does my favorite waitress at the Waffle House after I told her about them. She had been going to the doctor for that shot twice a week. She prefers the WM stuff. I don’t think you can overdose on B-12. Athletes take up to 20,000 units before a game.
That’s part of my lower back routine. Also:
1. Lie on your back, loop a rope around the sole of one foot, and pull the leg up to stretch hamstrings. Hold. Repeat w other leg. Alternate legs.
2. Lying down on back, lift butt off floor and hold. Repeat.
3. Get on all fours, arch back and hold. Repeat. (Cat arch)
4. While on all fours, lower your head and chest to floor to stretch lower back. Look like a Moslem praying.
5. Crunches.
Lastly, lots of walking relieves my sciatica and keeps it under control.
YMMV, of course. That routine works for me.
You too. WalMart. B-12 sublinguals, 5000 size. Once a day. Adjust the dosage yourself until you get an amount that works.
Two women I know threat their sciatica this way successfully. One id my daughter, She takes 7500 units a day-one 5000 and one 2500. . She feels fine. The other woman takes 5000 a day and says it helped her dump the xanax she was taking, too.
I used inversion therapy to help heal a slipped disk years ago. It saved me from having to go the surgery route, and possibly have my vertebrae fused together.
You really need to see a Chiropractor. Preferably one who also does Acupuncture or the Cold Laser treatment. Medical doctors will kill you, and you will be in pain until you die.
I follow his advice for other maladies that may very likely be psychosomatic. His theories make a lot of sense.
It looks, like that would hurt worse than the back pain!
when you can, walking is probably one of he best exercises to realign your muscles, nerves....
when I had pain down my hip into by thigh, I found it helpful to place a little folded hand towel or even smaller under the upper thigh on the affected side.....don't know why that worked for me but probably sort of an acupressure point....
Give it time, don’t try to do too much.
Start on NATURAL anti-inflammatories. Like Tumeric, and Omega-3, and there are a bunch of other natural ones out there.
Also, use Vick’s Vapo-Rub or a stronger sports hot-cold rub-on in the whole general area about 3x daily.
Just using NASIDS will only do so much, and you will start having problems if you stay on that much NASIDs for a long time. So mix in some natural.
Also, after about 3 months and the pain is minimal instead of constant, start login range of motion while still staying on the natural anti-inflamatories.
I just went back to the 3/31/2013 thread you were talking about and I was the one who brought up Dr. Sarno’s book !!
I’m so glad it helped you.
Keep to easy stretching for now.
My son got compression fractures in a couple of lumbar vertebrae from a snowboard jump. Dr. told him the same thing about the wallet. Now he uses a small money clip w some bills, a credit card, insurance card, and driver license in his front pocket.
