Sciatica

Posted on 08/29/2015 7:18:38 PM PDT by Maine Mariner

Some medical advice from Freepers is sorely needed.

About two weeks ago I twisted my lower back and the result sciatica. I have been taking 3 200mg of Advil and 2 300 mg Tylenol every six hours plus alternating between an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) and a hot water bottle. I have also been doing some exercises several times a day as recommended by my physical therapist. So here it is Saturday evening and I am in a lot of pain. What is so discouraging was today at about 2 pm for a couple of hours, I was pain free. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

First off you might want to make sure what you have is Sciatica, you can ask you doctor to be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon (don’t let him cut on you) if your insurance will allow then maybe a chiropractor, the types of treatment many already suggested here might just aggravate your condition if the diagnosis is not right.

Secondly regardless of your ailment, about 50% of your pain is muscular this is because your muscles suffer injury trying to compensate for misalignment and are not functioning normally so in all cases muscle relaxers will help, ask your doctor for Backlofen, a prescription drug that works quickly, effectively is long lasting and non-addictive, but it will of course make you drowsy.

Third and I think most important is get some oregano oil this will help relieve pain and support fast healing, a couple of drops lightly massaged into the base of your spine and then a couple drops massaged at the direct point of pain, you can do this several times a day as you feel needed, the only side effect is you might smell like a pizza for about an hour, after you are back to normal continue to massage one drop of oil to the base of the spine once every day, another thing you want to do is pay attention; what I’ve learned over many years; is that although it can happen suddenly, my back most often gives me warning signals prior to an event, that is when you want to start dealing with it; you can prevent serious injury, I’ve been dealing with this for over 35 years, tried everything this for me works, I have less severe attacks and can recover in usually three to five days where previously it took two to three plus painful weeks, certain specific exercises will help in prevention, but in my case I fail to be consistent, it is a commitment, I have found simply walking while paying attention to posture will do the same.

As to the oregano oil, you can get it at most vitamin stores but the quality and the active ingredient carvacrol is what you want to insure is the strongest, if you freepmail me I can direct you to an online source that has the highest quality and the maximum amount of active ingredient, I am not an affiliate just a customer they don’t do affiliation anyway.

In the words of Bill Clinton “I feel your pain” it is hard for others who don’t suffer chronic back pain to understand and it is even harder to explain, my back attacks are literally paralyzing for a couple of days, what ever anyone says you will not get over it, it can be treated and you can take preventative steps but not cured, surgery is an option, it has worked for some but generally you eventually will have to go back for more, that will be the only future option you have left, that is not a scientific or statistical evaluation, it is an observational one, it may not always be true, but in some cases it is prudent to believe what you see, I’ve seen far to many regret surgery.

I am rambling on because I know the suffering and I know what works after years of experimentation, so again if you would like a link to premium oregano oil (the best treatment and prevention) of highest quality and best price freepmail me for direct link.

I would have never believed the effectiveness and would not even have tried it if someone who recommended it had not given a bottle to try, I am not into homeopathic remedies but I love this stuff, it has many uses, I suggest you do a search “oregano oil” to get lots of info on its uses and effectiveness, you will be hard pressed to find anything negative other then the taste, which is not so bad and in fact I learned to love it.

Oregano oil can be used topically (as in back pain) or orally for other conditions, do not take orally if you are on coumadin or other blood thinners or have an allergy to oregano, but if you eat pizza or other foods high in oregano your are likely not allergic.

I have experienced it. It can make a grown man cry. I’d be careful of those OTC pain killers. Might be time to step up to the opiates to relieve the pain. But be careful.

Thanks. That’s a horrible experience for the poor woman and with such tragic consequences for her and her family and all because she waited until it was too late to see a real medical doctor. Far too many similar experiences happen every single day. As soon as I posted though, I realized my suggestion that the poster seek immediate medical attention was not going to be “heard” so I am happy that at least one person read and agrees.

Pain is a helpful tool we humans are blessed with as a means of signaling that something is wrong. Medical doctors are the only trained professionals who have the education and training to first get an initial impression from a patient’s complete history, assess symptoms, run appropriate tests, diagnose, recommend treatment and give a long term prognosis. Yet some patients seem fixated on seeking medical advice from everyone except a qualified and trained medical doctor. Perhaps they also ask for investment advice from the cashier at their local 7-11 Mini-Mart and rely upon their dry-cleaners to give sound legal opinions and advice.

Miraculous “cures” via chiropractor, over the counter devices, masseuse, vitamins, advice from a dietitian, and non-traditional medical treatments should be pursued only after being seen, diagnosed and treated first by a medical doctor. Then a patient can ask their doctor for recommendations for alternative treatments, ask if alternative treatments will interfere with prescribed medications and ask if alternative treatments will help or possibly worsen the underlying condition(s) causing the pain.

If the back pain isn’t referred pain from elsewhere and is related to a prior back injury which only a medical doctor would be able to determine, then a referral to a good board certified orthopedic surgeon is the next step.

A good orthopedic surgeon will only recommend surgery, or surgical procedures such as Chymopapain injections if and only if the same orthopedic surgeon can also give the patient a 100% guarantee that such surgical intervention will provide the patient at least 90% pain relief.

Lots of good orthopods but when you are suffering neuropathy I preferred the neurosurgeon after consulting with both while using my poor wife as a crutch. :-)

Nine years ago I had an L5/S1 partial disc collapse left sciatic - I can’t begin to describe the pain - it abated only slightly but lasted for 2 months without ceasing - the second physical therapist taught me stretches from the Egoscue method (it’s in paperback) - I was pain free within three days

My neurologist recommends I use Life Extension Advanced Bio-Curcumin with ginger and tumerones and DHA. She told me to take up to 3 times the amount of the Curcumin. It worked wonders until everything healed. Now I just take it for the brain inflammation.

My DIL is in severe pain and uses the strongest Fentelyn patch made and vicidine for break through pain. She says the Curcumin helps more than the meds for her break through pain.

I took ms contin controlled release coated pills, twice a day(double dose) and roxicondone 7.5mg (15 mg cut in half) 4-6 times a day for break through pain for 3 years. It only controlled the pain enough to keep me from killing myself.

After a 16 hour surgery (13 days in hospital) I was on even more pain meds for 2 months, Once the pain was gone I asked the pain doctor to help me get off the stuff. He was a quack and said no, that I still needed meds. I took the final prescription.

My PCP said she wasn't qualified to help me.

I went on line to see what junkies do to kick their habit. I threw out the timed release med., cut the 15 mg in half. Took it. When Withdrawal started I took a half. First sign of withdrawal for me was shivering when it was 90 degrees outside. Continued that for 2 weeks. Then I tried to cut them in thirds, did the best I could. Same thing for two weeks. Then I cut in quarters. Did that for another two weeks every time the chills hit.2 weeks later I threw them out. I was fine.

It's a real shame no one would help me and I didn't have money or time for rehab. Hate to say it and piss people off and I know we are all different but it was easy-peasy.

I needed pain meds a few weeks ago after foot surgery. After !.5 days I threw them away because the pain was controlled with over the counter pain meds a a couple shots of vodka spread out throughout the day.

I come from a long line of addicts.

My experience may not be typical. I have since learned that cholidine helps with the withdrawal so if you have high blood pressure you might want to ask for that. I take it to help me sleep. I don't have high blood pressure.

I hope my experience can help even one person that may take the time to read this.
