A lamb that was genetically modified with jellyfish genes for advanced research was sold to a slaughterhouse for meat in France, according to European news accounts. An investigation to find out how the genetically-altered animal ended up as meat is underway, according to Le Parisien, the French newspaper that broke the story.
"Rubis, the lamb, was found on a plate. Who ate her? No one knows. All that's known is the meat left a French slaughterhouse in November 2014" according to Le Parisien.
The story states Rubis came from a program started in 2009 called "Green Mutton" within the scientific research group INRA. The lamb was created with jellyfish genes intact to turn cells fluorescent, in the interest of visually studying heart disease, according to the French newspaper.
INRA said in a statement that the sheep express the gene to better show grafts onto hearts damaged by myocardial infarction. However, the lamb in question did not express the gene.
The meat was sold to a private individual in October 2014, and that an INRA employee had concealed the sale to the abattoir, the group added.
Selling any genetically-modified food in France is against the law, according to The Associated Press.
Did it taste like chicken?
If only it had been a MINT jellyfish...
Only a matter of time until these fools create prions that infect human brains and begin the zombie apocalypse...
Frank Herbert in his “Dune” series had a meat known as “slig,” a cross between a slug and a pig.
Jelly fish and Pinot Gris great combination!
This seems like meat that the lab should have eaten, not sent away.
On a day they are going to push a law through to allow them to keep GM food a secret here in the US.
Normally I would laugh but from observing what's escalating here in the US and around the world, anything is possible.....
Maybe I listen to too much talk radio and maybe I hang out on FR too much and am being overwhelmed with all that's going on, but I'm starting to get bad vibes........
Sounds like the makings of a SyFy Original movie.
I hope this doesn’t lead to spineless Frenchmen.
