Doctors remove 420 kidney stones 'caused by excessive tofu' from patient in China

The operation to remove hundreds of tiny stones took doctors around two hours

Doctors in China have removed 420 kidney stones from a man's body, blaming an excessive amount of tofu in his daily diet.

Mr He from Zhejiang Province in eastern China, checked into the Dongyang People's Hospital complaining of intense pain in his abdomen last month. A CT scan revealed that his left kidney was packed full of stones, most of them tiny.

Doctors operated on Friday in an agonising procedure that lasted about two hours.

Mr He said he had a history of suffering from kidney stones. Twenty years ago he had 10 stones removed using a procedure called lithotripsy, which sends shock waves to break up stones in the kidney, bladder, or ureter until they are small enough to pass in the urine.

"I have worked as a doctor for 30 years and have never seen so many stones," said Zhou Changchun, the attending surgeon, according to state newspaper Qianjiang Evening Post.

Saw a story recently about a guy in the Deep South that had kidney trouble, maybe to the point of destroying both, from drinking too much iced (black) tea, and eating lots of spinach.

Both black tea and spinach are high in oxalates, and he destroyed his kidneys as if he were drinking ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) which metabolizes into oxalic acid, and crystallizes in the kidneys.

I'll take a stab and postulate that the China man was drinking lots of black tea, too.

Back in the late 60s my uncle was with US Foreign Service in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He had to be Medivac'd to Rhein-Main AFB in Germany for surgery because of kidney stones. They put him on a half gallon of cranberry juice a day for several weeks. He was miffed they wouldn't let him put any vodka in it. He said that after that he hated the stuff but he still drank two glasses a week for the rest of his life.

Wish me luck

As long as the stones don't get bigger, you should be home free. I had 3 stones in one kidney. The largest was a bit over 3mm and caused me to roll on the floor in pain. ER gave me Flomax and I passed it in a day or so. The other 2 where 2mm stones. I passed one of them a few months later with out much pain. The last stone took about a year to pass and was a bit more painful, but nothing like the first one..

From google:

Vegetables that contain high levels of oxalate include rhubarb, okra, leeks, spinach, beets, and Swiss chard. To reduce how much oxalate you get, avoid almonds, cashews, and peanuts, as well as any soy products. Grains such as Bran Flakes, Fiber One, wheat germ, and quinoa are also higher oxalate foods.

Foods that contain oxalates

The following are some examples of the most common sources of oxalates, arranged by food group. It is important to note that the leaves of a plant almost always contain higher oxalate levels than the roots, stems, and stalks.

Fruits:

blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, currants, kiwifruit, concord (purple) grapes, figs, tangerines, and plums

Vegetables (see Table 1 for additional information):

spinach, Swiss chard, beets (root part), beet greens (leaf part), collards, okra, parsley, leeks and quinoa are among the most oxalate-dense vegetables
celery, green beans, rutabagas, and summer squash would be considered moderately dense in oxalates

Nuts and seeds:

almonds, cashews, and peanuts

Legumes:

soybeans, tofu and other soy products

Grains:

wheat bran, wheat germ, quinoa (a vegetable often used like a grain)

Other:

cocoa, chocolate, and black tea

Oxalis also contains high amounts of oxalates, thus the name:

I have heard women who have experienced both childbirth and kidney stones say that the pain from kidney stones is worse than that from childbirth. I don’t know whether this is true, or whether pain of childbirth is blunted in retrospect “on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world,” as the Evangelist John put it.

I had a bout of kidney stones and indeed they were quite painful, but during it, I kept thinking, “This hurt a lot, but really. . . worse than childbirth? . . . it’s not really *that* bad.” In retrospect, though, it *was* the worst pain I’ve ever experienced.

Since mine were the calcium variety, I’ve taken my urologist’s advice to drink lemon juice, in the form of large quantities of San Pelegrino limonata. Besides preventing kidney stones, it helps support one of the weaker Eurozone economies.

Doesn’t excessive spinach consumption also cause them?

There is controversy over whether eating oxalate-rich foods can cause stones, seeing that your body actually manufactures the compound in itself. They may be just a symptom of a body that over produces the chemical. Same arguments have come up for cholesterol rich foods as well, since some people have naturally high cholesterol................
