Firefox OS in flux as Mozilla loses technology chief to startup
Firefox ^ | 06/05/15 | Stephen Shankland

Mozilla, best known for its Firefox browser and operating system, has lost the man responsible for the core technologies of both products.roject to keep Firefox competitive with browsers like Google's Chrome.

His departure is part of major changes Mozilla faces with Firefox OS. While Gal is moving into a new market, a new competitive threat is arriving. Mozilla's former president, Li Gong, is at work on another startup nicknamed Gone Fishing that's building a mobile operating system relying on the same Web-based approach Firefox OS uses, CNET has learned. Gong was the Firefox OS business leader before being promoted to president in 2014; he left Mozilla in April, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Gal is sidestepping a smartphone market dominated by the twin powers of mobile operating systems, Google and Apple. Gong is taking them on directly.

Mozilla joined Microsoft, Samsung and BlackBerry in learning that it's brutally hard to compete successfully. Of the 334 million phones shipped during the first quarter of 2015, Google's Android OS accounted for 78 percent and Apple's iOS 18.3 percent, according to analysis firm IDC. That leaves just 3.7 percent for all other challengers.

But Gone Fishing offers a chance to replay the Firefox OS game with a different playbook. Mozilla's philosophical commitment to openness, choice and privacy didn't carry the day. By working with partners rather than pushing an agenda, Gone Fishing has a chance to see if pragmatism instead of principles will help loosen Apple's and Google's grip.

I’m part of the Android market now. I wanted the first one when they were first coming out in 2008, finally have one now.

It’s a good phone, and I’m not attached to it like many millions of people. My only gripe with it is the battery life. I don’t really use it much but the battery only lasts for a few days essentially being on standby.

Good; Mozilla fired its CEO, Brendan Eich for his support of California Proposition 8. Hopefully, they are hurt badly.

Best known for their browser and operating system? I didn’t even know they had an OS in the hunt. Sure, I knew about Firefox, but not an OS. I consider myself reasonable current and tech-savvy. Maybe that’s a part of their problem - few people realize there is yet another OS out there. Maybe that’s part of their problem too, it is simply yet another OS...

Maybe they will stop the insane rapid updates.

I quit updating around version 15, as many of the extention developers quit updating their extensions — due to the FF rapid update philosophy.

I did try Palemoon, but it ran into the same problem with no-longer-developed extensions between its version 24 and 25.

I am now using another rendition that uses the Mozilla engine: Cyberfox from 8pecxstudios.

I use Opera now and you can connect all the apps from FF like Adblocker, just the same. Yeah, i didn’t forget those clowns at FF who fired the guy who didn’t tow the “I love faggots” line...

I bought a 10” android tablet a couple of weeks ago just to play with. I still do ‘real’ computing on a Win7 laptop and desktop.

Tablet is okay, but the icons and text is too small. Even setting the text to extra large in the ‘setting’ only increases them a slight bit.

Also, trying to finger touch the icons and text takes several attempts. My finger hits one area and the area above or below lights up as if it was selected.

Mine has a keyboard and mouse pad. Good thing, because many times finger touching a button or selection will do nothing. I have to move the pointer with the mouse pad to make the selection.

Overall — not very impressed with android or 10” tablets.

Maybe you just have big fingers. I’m a small guy so I usually don’t have a problem with a 7” tablet.

I also do my real computing on my PC I built myself. It’s cheap but I’m proud of it.

Good; Mozilla fired its CEO, Brendan Eich for his support of California Proposition 8. Hopefully, they are hurt badly.

The reality is even if smearing Brendan Eich winds up permanently damaging Mozilla, no one, particularly no one at Mozilla, would ever admit it.

In the meantime, no Firefox for me! I don't want to support shortsighted witchhunting haters...
