Microsoft's next generation of its operating system, Windows 10, is due to be released next month.
The company said PCs and tablets running the software would go on sale on 29 July, at which point the OS would also be offered as a free download to existing users.
The roll-out of the product for smartphones, Xbox games consoles and other kit will follow later.
One expert said the release could prove critical to the Microsoft's fortunes.
Windows 8 - the current iteration - has had a troubled life, with many deciding not to update to its touch-centric user interface.
The company has acknowledged the fact by returning some features dropped from the more popular Windows 7.

I have a “Get Windows 10” icon that showed up a couple of days ago. I would rather wait and see how things go than upgrade immediately.
When I logged into my Windows 7 computer this morning there was a new task bar icon. Something about Windows 10 upgrade. Anybody else see this?
Thanks. For later.
Yes same thing here.
Had an icon appear and I guess I’ll try it. Hopefully there would be a way to go back to Windows 7 if I don’t like it.
If you’re really concerned about it ... buy a blank hard drive, clone your existing system disk onto it, make sure the clone boots and runs properly, THEN try it. On the clone. Keep the original as a drop-in reversion to the current state.
I saw that icon today for the first time. Clicking on it opens a pane that will let you reserve a copy. Apparently, there's a 3GB download that happens in the background.
Any word on how long the free upgrade will be available? I have enough on my plate this summer - don’t need to add upgrading every 7/8 machine to 10.
Same here on my Windows 7. There’s a Windows 10 icon on the task bar to reserve an upgrade. Want more info before I do it.
If you're happy with your Windows 7 I wouldn't bother upgrading.
From what I’m hearing in the industry, Win10 is the next “solid” windows operating system a la XP.
Wife got the notification on her laptop and asked me about it. I have not, and we’re both running W-7.
After hearing people wail about what a horrible downgrade W-8 was and how they were locked out of reverting back to W-7 I am determined to sit back and observe from a distance for a while before committing to any such “upgrade”.
W-7 isn’t all that bad, although I still think I liked XP better.
Kept XP on the old tower down cellar as a back up, and as long as I keep redundant AV on it and don’t play around risky web sites or open mystery links don’t have any issues with security with it.
If MS still supported it I’d still be using it as primary OS.
[If you’re happy with your Windows 7 I wouldn’t bother upgrading.]
I read somewhere that MS would ‘automatically’ download it if using Win 7, do you know if that’s true?
I read a couple articles after googling ‘upgrading w7 to w10’ and they were positive so I’ll probably do it but my son is the deciding factor, he knows puters and I’m puter illiterate. :)
“They told me I should upgrade to Windows 7 or better, so I installed Linux.”
Yup. Noticed it this a.m. and it stated I could reserve for a free full up version to be turned loose on 7/29. We’ll see as the days go by what some of the “experts” have to say.
I liked XP better also but W7 has been fine.
I hadn't heard that and believe it would be a stupid move on Microsoft's part. In any case sounds like it's not gonna happen anytime soon.
