Hollywood actor Omar Sharif is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and struggles to remember his most famous films, his son has revealed.

The 83-year-old Egyptian-born actor, who shot to fame in 1962 when he starred in Lawrence of Arabia and later for his title role in Doctor Zhivago in 1965, has been struggling with the illness for the last three years.

His son, Tarek El-Sharif, has revealed his father has now retired from acting due to the illness, which has seen him confusing the names of his most famous films and forgetting where they were filmed.

He says his father knows he is a famous actor, but confuses fans who come up to him for people he used to know whose names and faces he has forgotten. …

Yeah, my first thought too. You have to be pretty sharp to play bridge correctly as opposed to just playing for fun while you gossip with your friends. That’s fine too but I’ve heard that Omar was serious about bridge.

So are most Egyptians much younger than Omar.

I agree with your wife! I also adored Ricardo Montalban. (Jokes about Corinthian leather are uncalled for. Just think of him in those Esther Williams movies.)

Dr Zhivago IMHO is the greatest movie ever made.

Alzheimer’s may turn out to be largely avoidable, and possible to arrest, and perhaps reverse.

Get the added sugar and grains out of the diet. Add fats, esp. DHA & EPA Omega 3 (not ALA, which you get enough of). Ditch the PUFA grain oils. Either Perlmutter’s “Brain Maker” (2015) or Davis’ “Wheat Belly Total Health” (2014) are a great place to start.

Even Perlmutter is starting to refer to Alz as Diabetes Type 3, which he heretofore was reluctant to do.

Yes, the USDA’s MyPlateOfMetabolicSyndrome diet, high carb, high grain, low fat, has been a 40 year experiment that has failed massively (and was based on no science at all, but lots of politics & money concerns).

Can’t help but wonder: will George Clooney make jokes about him, too?

My mom was diagnosed several years ago with onset Alzheimer’s Disease...

Trying to ascertain what to do. She lives in Virginia, on the family property owned since the mid-1700s. My family reside in Alabama. I have been researching options regarding her care choices. Although my husband and I want her to come live with us and have access to many in-home care opportunities, it is an extremely difficult decision. Especially with the realization that Mama wants to stay home. Hopefully, I can locate at-home care services in that area. So far, I have not been able to find any professional organizations or independent providers.

If by chance anyone has advice, I am open to hearing it.

Very sad, a really good actor.
Also believe he was an excellent bridge player.

re: the snake venom discovery

That may well be effective against one of the consequences of AD, the plaques, but as the article points out, the tests were in vitro (test tube or petri dish). Getting the drug across the blood-brain barrier, without allowing adverse stuff in, is a steep challenge.

Most people, without realizing it, are eating adverse foods that already compromise the BBB. Perlmutter discusses several. Wheat is one of them.
