Hollywood actor Omar Sharif is suffering from Alzheimers disease and struggles to remember his most famous films, his son has revealed.
The 83-year-old Egyptian-born actor, who shot to fame in 1962 when he starred in Lawrence of Arabia and later for his title role in Doctor Zhivago in 1965, has been struggling with the illness for the last three years.
His son, Tarek El-Sharif, has revealed his father has now retired from acting due to the illness, which has seen him confusing the names of his most famous films and forgetting where they were filmed.
He says his father knows he is a famous actor, but confuses fans who come up to him for people he used to know whose names and faces he has forgotten.

Just saw him in “Juggernaut”.
I understand he had an incredibly bad gambling problem at one time. Not saying that they are related in anyway. what a shame. What a brutal disease.
Wasn’t Omar at one time a Chess Champ?
“Wasnt Omar at one time a Chess Champ?”
He may have been, but his real love in game is BRIDGE.
Bridge.
Does he really have Alzheimer's? Confusing where you shot movies doesn't seem too unusual for a man in his 80s.
He must have had a real high IQ. Obama has a 103 IQ. Omar
could still probably beat Obama at chess. Obama’s moves on the battlefield stink.
I just told my wife, she was sad to hear this news.
Omar was near the top of here list of most handsome movie stars.
If you look at it from the perspective that he is supporting the other side, the moves are pretty good.
Omar was born CHRISTIAN ARAB !!!!
That’s correct. The woman he converted to Islam for died earlier this year, too.
I wouldn’t wish Alzheimer’s - or any form of dementia, for that matter - on anyone.
I hope Mr. Sharif knows as much peace and comfort as is possible in the years ahead.
He is currently spending most of his time in hotels in Eqypt and spends his time relaxing on his terrace after breakfast and listening to live music in the hotel bar at night time.
Good for him!
"Wait. You dropped your phony dog poo."
"What phony dog poo?"
One of my favorite movies with him was McKenna’s Gold.
I am sorry for anyone with Alzheimer’s. It’s incredibly debilitating and over a long period of time, you suffer. The family suffers. Both suffer financially. Your friends suffer. It’s awful.
Sad. He wasn’t justs a pretty face, he had a brain. Champion bridge player.
Omar is probably still fearsome at the Bridge table.
103 is not great... Mensa is 130, IIRC.
