Astrophysicist and cosmologist Neil DeGrasse Tyson is defending Scientology in light of HBO's highly critical documentary on the church.
HBO's documentary "Going Clear" did not show the church in an entirely positive light Scientology has a built a reputation for tormenting members who leave it either by surveillance or harassment.
The film highlights the celebrities who made the religion intriguing to the world as well as the horrific stories of abuse from former members.
But Tyson, in an interview with The Daily Beast, declined to bash the controversial church, saying people are free to believe whatever they want.
"So, you have people who are certain that a man in a robe transforms a cracker into the literal body of Jesus saying that what goes on in Scientology is crazy? Lets realize this. What matters is not who says whos crazy, what matters is we live in a free country," Tyson, known for his skeptical views of Christianity, said. "You can believe whatever you want, otherwise its not a free countryits something else. If we start controlling what people think and why they think it, we have case studies where that became the norm. I dont care what the tenets are of Scientology. They dont distract me. I dont judge them, and I dont criticize them."
There is dispute, however, about whether or not Scientology is a legitimate religion.

Probably when the guys wouldn't let Cartman in their club/clique. He went looking for a club that would take him. He found a “really cool club” mainly guys older than him that even wanted to take him to one of their “conventions” NAMBLA
Got it. It (and I) are clear now!
Gosh, it's almost as if he's just another media shill and racist carrying water for the anti-American anti-Christian Jew-hating *-**** fake POTUS. Ping to science lists.
Do we need to wonder what he’d say about the Klan?
Wasn’t it L. Ron Hoover?
Thats what He would want you to believe...
Al says He Invented Appliantology,,,Tipsy...er Tipper backs em up... and I Believe Them...I Believe!!
Thanks!
I learned from Frank Zappa, back in the ‘late ‘70’s, that L.Ron Hoover was Appliantology’s creator. You, sir or madam, blaspheme.
ahahahah Professor Zappa told me the same thing!
Imagine zappa singing about Obie The Magnificent!!??
I played joe’s garage until I could see through the black plastic.
I can recite a great deal of it from memory
it was a true classic utterly poetic and as sharp as a laser beam!!
It was the joe’s garage album that convinced me to mutilate my gibson explorer guitar by installing a rex bogue preamp..in the guitar...just like many of Frank’s had on them.
Yes.. i do not accept that as a valid interpretation of Scripture to else eating of the dead or even the living would be valid....the offing was made by the living Christ.. its it substitute for Christ physical body just as Christ was a substitute for us on the cross ...its for us to be as one
And DeGrasse believes the myth that nothing changed into something and then that something changed into a brain.
HIS religion is far more like scientology than is the belief that a Designer has always been here.
Nothing leads to nothing. Just a fact.
"Hate" them? Christ commanded us to love our enemies, much as he loved us while we were his enemies.
Well said Newgeezer
Where relationships are concerned, the fact that you wouldn’t say, date a black doesn't make you a racist.
Maybe you are not attracted to them. Maybe a few minutes with them shows you that your world-views are too far apart for a long-term relationship to work, and that's what you’re looking for.
And maybe you'd be wrong about that. But you would not be wrong to make your own relationship choices based on whatever criteria you choose, and it doesn't make you a racist or a bigot or even a conservative.
Did he say that? Seems to me that someone is a little bit Christophobic.
They are open to other skin color and ethnicity, some are even open to same gender or bi-partners. They are adamantly against those who believe in a god.
I get this from what they write in their profiles and how they answer the potentially thousand of questions. Some answer 25, some answer 500.
Bingo!
Why does a high profile athiest like this have to say such stupid things.
Well, never having actually put a profile on-line, other than here, I’m not really certain what the questions would be.
Still, I understand your point. have a great day :)
