Probably, because the old films could not hide as much things like height, the heights had to be real. Today, thanks to special effects, they can hide things like this so other things, like aesthetics become more important.

They left out Gary Cooper...of course he wasn’t much of an actor. Yet he is in many of my favorite movies, go figure.

Directors like short male actors close to same height as actresses - easier to film.

Actors whose heads look too big for their bodies are judged to look better on today’s screens.

It's not just their physical height - it's the inner strength and gravitas they seemed to have - they were much "weightier" back then.

Sure, there are some good actors nowadays, but they are like boys compared to Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, et al.

Why? Because the gay guys are running the Academy.

Do actors represent the ideal? Is pajama boy the ideal in the non acting sphere? Generally along with the moral and psychological degeneration in a dying civilization there goes a physical degeneration. Such degeneration would be reflected in the popular media.

No there were shorter male stars back when..

My mother used to tell of reading that some male stars would stand on a box when standing next to a taller female star for scenes that called for them standing together..

and for one taller female (I think it might have been Sophia Loren) they dug a trench and had her walked down in it along side the shorter male to make him appear taller than she was..

this would have been the 1940/50s and it may have also been that the stars were the same height or he just an inch or 2 taller and they wanted the male to seem taller than the female..

Men lie about their height. Generally claim to be taller then they are. Women on the other hand we lie about our weight. :)

They cherry picked some data. For the most part people (especially men) driven to fame tend to be short. It’s one of the ways short man syndrome manifests, that need to be “respected” by others turns into a need to be adulated by the masses. There’s always going to be exceptions, but by and large the famous are short... and neurotic.

Women are also wearing incredibly high heels in performances with men. No one seems to care if it makes them look taller than the men anymore. There was a time when that was a no no.

I think it is odd. Often looks like the men are shorter than the women when in fact they are not.

I saw Arnold Schitzenegger in person. He is an orange haired runt about 5’6” and he wears elevator shoes. If you look closely at some of the old I Love Lucy reruns you can see Desi Arnaz wearing elevator shoes to match up with Lucy.

I know Robert Duvall is about average, but I only know this because he was in line behind me at a grocery store. Decent guy.

A lot of male stars of the 1920s-40s were short to medium in height. Then, in the post-war years, and especially on television, there was a trend towards some particularly tall stars. Guys in the 6ft5 to 6ft7 range, like James Arness, Chuck Connors, Clint Walker, Fess Parker and such.

What stands out to me about modern-era male leads is not their height, but their bratty, metrosexual comportment and manner. I find them embarrassing, compared to the kind of sturdy, adult masculine protagonists the culture used to promote. I guess it’s just par-for-the-course in today’s faggoty America, but it never ceases to turn my stomach.
