Dr. Pepper The Doctor Of Choice For A 104-Year-Old Woman [TX]

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A Fort Worth woman is celebrating her 104th year of life. “Well at 103 I didn’t think I’d make it, but I’m still perking along.” At 104 years old, Elizabeth Sullivan says she doesn’t need the advice of real doctors. So she keeps another doctor close by.

“People try to give me coffee for breakfast. Well, I’d rather have a Dr. Pepper.” Sullivan fell in love with the soft drink’s trademark “23 flavors” when she was in her 60’s. “I started drinking them about 40 years ago. Three a day. Every doctor that sees me says they’ll kill you, but they die and I don’t. So there must be a mistake somewhere”

For her birthday she got a very big surprise. A beautiful cake shaped like what else, Dr. Pepper.

Commenting on her special day she said, “When you live to be 104 and still can talk to nice people, you deserve some Dr. Pepper, but I never expected this.”

She even got a gift basket straight from the CEO of Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Larry Young.

Sullivan is well known in the Fort Worth community. She taught math at Paschal High School for 15 years. Tutored football players for free. Today she’s thinking more about what and who she’s thankful for. “Man I’m feeling good. I’m glad I’m still here. I’m glad I’m not in a rest home. Glad I can read books and watch TV and have people come by and say hello.”

She was asked if she has a secret for living past 100. She said she really doesn’t, other than, “you just keep living”.

Our Big Lots sells Cokes made with real sugar instead of HFCS. They import them from Mexico where HFCS is illegal...............

There are kosher for Passover sodas that are real sugar. Coke and Pepsi products and smaller brands. They are usually distributed almost everywhere instead of just Jewish neighborhoods. I know many people (not Jewish) who stock up around Passover Should be available right now.

Cool. ...I'm a Pepper for sure.

But not the diet.

The best tasting diet soda I like is Barqs Root Beer.

I'm in my 50s but have yet to take prescription drugs. Now I've had some short term prescriptions over the years such as for pain relief, but even those, I would tend to switch over to Southern Comfort for pain relief. The bottle would say "don't take with alcohol" so I said screw it, I'll just toss the pills and take the alcohol instead.

My grandmother lived to be 98 years old and she always told me she never took the prescriptions the doctors tried to give her.

I know people my age who have medicine cabinets full of prescription drugs and they carry around those color coded pill dispensers so they don't lose track of the amount of pills they have to take during the day.

I wonder about that. I wonder whether the pills are keeping them well or if the pills are keeping them sick.

I suppose there are situations where you need to take the pills to stay alive. I resolve to hold off as long as possible getting on prescription drugs.

I self medicate with about $3000 of Lucky Strikes, and $1300 of coffee every year. It's probably less expensive than the appropriate amount of liquor I would require to survive without Luckies and coffee.

Diet Dr. Pepper is okay if there’s nothing else. It has the least aftertaste of any of the other diet drinks.

I remember when sodium cyclamate was used to sweeten diet soft drinks back in the 60’s and very early 70’s. Diet drinks actually tasted good with no aftertaste at all! It was used for ‘Pre-Sweetened Kool-Aid’ and everything else that diabetics could not drink or eat that required sugar because it wouldn’t lose its sweetening power even when baked.

But then some researcher discovered that if you fed a boxcar load of it to a rat it died of cancer and was removed from the market.

If it was invented today, it would be allowed for consumer use because the rules have changed and the old test methods are no longer in effect.

But because the Aspartame, Equal, Sweet-n-Low, and other zero calorie lousy sweetener manufacturers have such pull on Capitol Hill it will never be allowed again.

If Moochelle was really serious, and I mean really serious about getting Americans to stop using sugar, then she would be pushing this old artificial sweetener to be put back on the market.................

My dad drank buttermilk too. He would trick me... “you want a sip of my milk?”.
“sure.... uuewwuk!”

Buttermilk is for making biscuits and marinading fish or frog legs. Not for drinking.

I used to couldn't stand Dr. Pepper until I read that its taste is supposed to duplicate the smell of an old-timey drug store.

Short-lived, out of a little bottling company in New Orleans.

I don't actually remember how it taste, just remember it when I was young.

Now that's funny. I figure anyone over 100 can pretty much eat and drink or smoke anything they bloody well want.
