Williamsburg mom prepared to face charges for abandoning “dangerous” son

Williamsburg, Va. – Kimberlyn Williams feels unsafe in her own home because of her 12-year-old son.

“I am his mother and I do love him, but he`s dangerous,” Williams says.

She says he’s so dangerous that she is prepared to face jail time to keep him out of the house, to not only protect herself, but her two younger children.

“I have been hit, bit, kicked,” she says. “He has threatened to stab children at school, to kill them. He has these outbursts.”

She says her son is now at Riverside Behavioral Health Center in Hampton. He was put there after Williams called police last week because of what she says she witnessed between her son and four-year-old daughter.

“When I went in, I found him exposing himself to her and trying to coerce her to touch him,” Williams says.

Williams says that was the final straw after years of violent and inappropriate behavior, and years of trying to get him the help he needs.

“It`s not a case of us not trying to get him help,” she says. “This is not an isolated incident. It’s been a gauntlet of doctors and medications and diagnoses.”

Her son is set to be released Thursday, but Williams does not want to bring him home.

“If I do not show up to get him, I will face criminal charges or child abandonment,” she says.

Williams says Child Protective Services told her if she refuses to take him, her son would be placed in a 24-hour supervision residential facility — something she’s wanted all along. She says it would take police arresting her to get her wish.

“I want something to get done,” Williams says. “I don`t want it to be you take this one and you risk your other children’s health and safety or you go to jail. There has to be a better way.”

To get her son the help he needs, Williams says she’s prepared to face the consequences.

“Nobody wants to talk about this,” she says. “It`s something we would certainly consider a private family issue, but along those lines maybe it can help other people.”

Neither James City County Police nor CPS will comment

How can this be justified as a “conservative position” when that’s exactly what we’re trying to stop ... in having the government “pick up the tab” on anything that we’re not willing or “able” to take care of. This is what a LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE are saying about all sorts of other things ... “We’re not able to afford this, so the government needs to do this for us!”

I wonder what would make a 12 year old so bad.

There are no cut and dried answers...........some children, for whatever reason, are hard wired towards violence.

Many years ago i discussed a similar situation with a friend of mine who is a PHD child psychologist. The topic dealt with a 7 year old child in California I think, who killed a playmate by bashing his head in with a rock.......

While unexplainable, he did offer that that child would forever be a menace to society......

Your mistake is equating the “conservative position” with “never asking for any kind of help whatsoever, no matter how warranted.” That is twisted and a boon to the Left, who will always look for any opening they can to call a conservative, a hypocrite.

News flash: Not all good, conservative, American families are perfect. Sometimes they have problems beyond their ability to deal with. If you’ve never been confronted with such, get on your knees and thank God for it. But don’t just assume that another who has, is somehow “wimping out” or “being a hypocrite” because they ask for help.

We talk about ... on this forum ... a WHOLE LOT of situations where “people can’t deal with it” ... From housing to food to health insurance to having basic communications ... where all sorts of people “need help”.

This is just another item in a long list of items where you get people thinking that “government” needs to do it for me when I can’t do it or I’m not able to do it.

That doesn’t sound conservative to me, but liberal.

Prior to states taking responsibility for the mentally ill and building the big state mental health facilities, families locked the mentally ill in rooms, icehouses, or attics. Neighbors and family killed the mentally ill and they were often executed

State facilities were seen as compassion in helping families by caring for the mentally and severely developmentally delayed. They got three hots and a cot.

About 30 years ago I worked in a county contracted nursing home which formerly was a county poor farm and also had a building used in the early 1900's for the criminally insane. I don't mean typical mental illness I mean ones who had to be shackled. The building was closed maybe in the late 1940's early 1950's. It took the patients that the state mental hospital before that time was not equipped to handle and could not offer enough security to house them. When the state mental hospital upgraded to handle security concerns that building I saw was then closed.

The state had a nearby mental hospital opened in the late 1890's that took in the regional mental patients and had a good record for both permanent and in and out treatment. Familes could take family members there and get them help no red tape involved. The objective was treatment at the level of care needed.

In the 1970's that changed. The do gooders eventually got it closed by the late 1990's. Within literally months after the processing of freedom began in the 1970's so did the homeless issues and the crime involved.

Reading some post some posters do not understand the families can't just wave a wand and say you are getting help even to a minor. Family can not force someone to take their medications. The very laws that opened up the mental hospital doors to let patients go free now prevent the families from taking action.

So who is now the mental health care providers? COPS, Untrained or incapable both monetary and skills wise families, homeless shelters, COPS, you get the idea.

Some, a very small minority of those incapable of ever caring for themselves ended up t the facility I worked at. About 50 actually and they weren't a threat to others. The rest? Homeless, possibly living with family with COPS showing up all the time and ending up Suicide By Cops sometimes, and Jail. Jail has become the new Mental hospital. The same ones bitching that state should not be involved will cry Police Brutality when one of their enlightened citizens points a weapon at a COP.

A person can be for smaller limited government and still have enough Common Sense to realize some things are just too much for families to handle due to skills needed. But it's more fun to preach blame the family.

If it happens to one of theirs they'll knock family members down trying to get away far enough from taking responsibility themselves because they are Free and no one is going to obligate them /semi sarcasm. But seen a lot of it before.

OK, so how many thousands of dollars should this Mom pay (if she has it) before she goes bankrupt and the state has to take the kid anyway? He is criminally insane.

Or just let him rape his sister (or your kid) and get him locked up in juvie. Jail is state intervention, too. And an option she has, if she presses charges.

believe me, if you have never faced the choices you have when a family member is insane or a threat to themselves or others, and needs long term perhaps lifetime institutionalization - you should not preach.

maybe you or the other family guy posters could offer to adopt him? How’s your medical insurance? Got 100K spare cash to pay - for the first year?

Institutionalization is imprisonment. No question. But in many cases it protects the patients from the outside world as well as protecting the outside world from the patients.

Of course there needs to be a high bar. But there needs to be a compassionate solution to this issue and right now I would expect leftists to begin with mercy killing.

No ... I’m not saying that people can’t ask for help, but that it’s not the government’s position to set up “programs” to do this. As conservatives here on this forum have said before ... the government should not be in the business of “handouts” ... but rather neighbors and friends and churches and private organizations.

STOP the government from taking our TAX MONEY and forcing us to help who the GOVERNMENT thinks needs help, and leave it in the hands of PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS to give as they see fit for themselves. I believe THAT is the conservative position ... namely not to refuse to give help, but to give help freely of one’s own CHOICE and do so privately, without government coercion!

His first knee jerk position was why should the state have to pay for it.

The whole keep the state out of family life didn’t come up for a bit.

I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he just got sucked into the heat of an argument and didn’t want to seem to lose face.

My own position is that this woman is trying mightily to take care of her family. Her oldest son has mental illness issues and is a danger to the other children.

She’s responsible enough to know that she can’t keep them safe with the disturbed child in the house so she asked for help.

As someone who has a child living in a group home I know it’s never a decision to be taken lightly.
The woman in this story is doing the right and responsible thing. Trying to Protect her children.

How does your position help the mother in this article, RIGHT NOW? Tell us, specifically, what should she do?! She has a 12 yr old who has already attempted to molest her 4 yr old. WHAT does she do? Chain him outside? Lock him in a closet? Is that acceptable to you, that she go to jail and her other children get fostered, in order to preserve some sort of "conservative" principle you think needs upholding?

No, I’m not suggesting anyone “disappear” someone. This was in the 50’s so I’d guess they put him away. I’ve often wondered what happened to him. Dad is gone so I guess I’ll never know. I sure hope he never was able to go after anyone else. If I had not been a quick kid, I’d have been run over. I still remember Dad rushing outside and going nuclear.

It does make you wonder how that kid ended up doesn’t it.

The kid from my neighborhood (we only lived there a few months) was a real bully to all the other kids. He was older than the rest of us by 5-6 years.
I don’t know what happened to him either except a short time after we moved my mother talked to his mother on the phone and the kid has hit his mom in the leg with a machete. I don’t know if it was intentional or just an accident though.

The compassionate solution should be provided by people who donate out of compassion. That would be in regards to the institution.

And the laws, of course, would have to be handled by the government, per the US Constitution, and yes, a very high bar indeed, because there’s no way I would ever want to see us going the way of imprisoning (”institutionalizing”) because of the state determining they want to get rid of those who oppose state policy (like gun rights, or Christians, or against abortion or homosexuality, etc.)

It’s all about how to maintain a conservative position, and not go into that inexorable slide (which it seems to be) into perpetual and permanent liberalism!

And there will always be “hard cases” ... but one must not abandon the principles because things seem too difficult or beyond us. We must devise the right answer (whatever it is) to maintain our position.

The “asking for the help” is not the problem ... the problem is in expecting the “government” to be the one doing it. You’re framing this as if I’m saying that it’s the “asking for help” that is not a conservative position. If you really read up on this stuff, you’ll find “that” is not it. It’s demanding that “government” be the avenue for help ... food stamps, health care, housing, phones, living costs, and you name it. No ... the conservative position is to NOT TAX EVERYONE for whomever the government determines needs help ... but rather allow conservatives to “freely give help” as they personally see fit to individuals, churches, organizations and whomever else needs it. It is NOT COERCED and FORCED a from government but freely given by individuals themselves.

“The compassionate solution should be provided by people who donate out of compassion. That would be in regards to the institution.”

And in a perfect world that’s how it should be.

We don’t have a perfect world. The state already finances mental health facilities. So that boat has sailed and it won’t be back.

So you argument is a lot of balloon juice or as my ole grandmother used to say:

“You ain’t even saying anything, you’re just talking to hear your head rattle”

” the conservative position is to NOT TAX EVERYONE for whomever the government determines needs help “

Except the mentally ill do need help. They can be dangerous to themselves and others.
This isn’t about Obamaphones or lotto tickets.

The fact that you’re trying to lump a serious medical emergency in with the graft of welfare cheats is pretty telling.
Unless of course you support that same position for all public services such as the fire and police depts or even jails.

That’s the one thing I hold against President Reagan, I know the court was about to order them all released anyway,...

I recall deinstutionalization started under Carter. I think Ken Keasy's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" had a lot to do with moving many to agree to close down the nut houses.

I’m talking about the conservative position here that we work to either maintain or get it to that point where it is reality. If you just say, “Well the conservative position just doesn’t work in our imperfect world!” ... then you’ve basically thrown out the conservative position as nothing but a lot of talk, because it will never work as we’ll ALWAYS be in an imperfect world.

Another way to say it is that since the conservative position won’t work in an imperfect world, we’ll accept the liberal position until such a time as we have a perfect world! ... LOL ...

You’re right that we’ll never have a perfect world.

And no your position won’t work. It already didn’t work which was why State Mental Hospitals were instituted in the first place.
