Lyrics to song on current Apple Commercial:
"Who Needs You" by The Orwells.
You better toss your bullets You better hide your guns You better help the children Let 'em have some fun You better count your blessings Kiss mom and pa You better burn that flag Cause it ain't against the law!
You better pledge your allegiance You're not the only one Listen up forefathers I'm not your son You better save the country You better pass the flask You better join the army I said: "no thank you, dear old uncle Sam!"
You better toss your bullets You better hide your guns You better help the children Let them have some fun, some fun, some fun!
There are lots of great songs out there that would have been better choices, and would not have required censoring.
Everybody makes mistakes. I hope Apple realizes this one, pulls the ad, and makes their ad agency do better next time.
Apple's done some of the best ads in history. They can regain the high ground.
Hear! Hear!
“Im heterosexual, so I dont know anything about Apple products, “
No,,, You’re just an idiot.
For the record I have no particular bent against Apple. I’ve been using an IPad for my primary surfing for awhile now. Just yesterday my wife stated that she’d like one as well.
I hadn’t heard the gigantic commercial linked above. I don’t watch very much TV. The only reason I saw this “change” ad was that I watched the NFL playoffs this weekend (the only games I’ve watched so far this season). This commercial was played heavily during the games.
Both commercials to me shows that Apple is pushing the boundaries of their dual-messaging: we’re cool if you’re part of the in crowd. It’s like knowing how to order from In-N-Out: it’s a whole other layer of branding than what’s on the surface. One time is a questionable mistake. Two is a trend.
You're absolutely right about that. Jobs was an impossible act to follow exactly. Apple is still doing a lot of things right, and will continue to thrive, but a bit of the sharp edge has been dulled. Not a fatal flaw, but I do miss that sharp edge.
Speaking of edge, did I ever mention I came within about $100 of buying one of the original Apple I boards, in Philadelphia of all places, back before the Apple II. I was working with a KIM-1 at the time and putting my money into expanding that. *sigh* I still have that KIM-1. It's not worth nearly what an original Apple I would be. *sigh*
What a monumental marketing mistake. They just insulted a HUGE percentage of their loyal customers for no good reason whatsoever.
Watch and see if this doesn’t blow up in their faces over the next 48 hours. I can already see Apple computers being smashed all over YouTube because of this.
LOL. "Food fight!" (dayglored exits stage right, snickering)
LOL!
Steve Jobs offered my nephew a position in Apple, working for shares, when there were ten people working at Apple. . . and he turned him down. Every one of those ten, except the partner, who sold back his shares, is worth millions if not billions today!
I doubt it.
> I doubt it.
Sadly, Swordmaker is right. The days when kids smashed their Beatles albums because John Lennon noted the Beatles were more popular than Jesus are long over. (Of course, he was correct, in the teenage demographic who know who the Beatles were, but that's beside the point...)
And sadly, that's why Apple probably WON'T pull the ad. It would draw more attention to their error. They'll just let it die a natural death.
I turned around..she was gone.
You're probably right. Them dumb hick, low infos in fly over country, will probably never make the connection. /s
Seriously though, don't you think this is a stunningly bad marketing error on Apple's part? How could they not stop and consider how fast the 'anti-American' meme could grow via social networking over something life this?
Since you're the number one Apple fan on the forum, I'd like to know how you take this.
Nice, there aren’t as many of you guys as you think.
Never mind. I just saw your comment upthread. Predictably, you shrugged it all off.
Thanks anyway.
There are plenty. Your comment was quite foolish and offensive. I do music, and macs are still better for that. My girlfriend would slap you silly.
It’s sad that you feel the need to tell us that you have a girlfriend over a throw away Apple joke, you might want to lighten up a little.
Humans haven't changed their innate instincts in just half a century. People still get angry when their personal convictions are insulted. And today, their anger travels a lot faster, due to the internet and social media.
Perhaps we won't see hundreds of YouTube videos of people pitching their Apple computers, but something this hurtful is bound to draw a response from the public.
How big a response? Who knows, but one thing is certain -- if they were bold enough (or dumb enough) to insult so many of their loyal customers with this ad, they'll do it again. Especially if the public response is tepid or negligible.
Me,,, lighten up? After your comment that relates Apple users to fags? You’re the one that has a problem.
