A divergence in African American culture has made it easy for people to categorize "good" and "bad" blacks separatelyand that's a huge problem
My parents sent me to an all-white elementary school when I was 4. I speak and think differently than them because of it. This is a small, common tragedy of black life that we dont talk about: the best way for me to find success in my own country was to be immersed in a culture entirely different from my parents and adopt it as my own. But that experience taught me lessons that I now find intuitivehow to find common ground with different people, how to come off as non-threatening to others, how to chalk up racist statements to a misunderstanding. You could probably label me clean and articulate, like my President.
There are a lot of black people like me now who grew up straddling two different racial worlds. Blackish, the only comedy on broadcast TV featuring a prominent African American cast, is centered on this increasingly prevalent concept of black identity. I dont want to paint my experience as some painful upbringing. I had a big, loving family and, eventually, great friends of all races. But I fear some people are learning the wrong lessons when they meet black people like methat I am somehow more acceptable or less problematic than other black folks. That Mike Brown, Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin should have behaved exactly like me to avoid being killed.

The author is an idiot.

Yeah, but his exclusion from the black ghetto thug cultue and his receiving a “white” education did pay off.
But he’s still no better than some liberal with “white guilt”.
lolol
my response to the author of the piece - 93% of blacks voted in 2012 for a known evil racist whose only accomplishment was to get back at whites and destroy capitalism.
Their racist blood is on their hands. All 93% of them.
Wow, this is some serious collective mentality.
If someone calls Al Gore a fat big, as a white person, I do not take offense as if it’s directed at me. This is some really messed up thinking.
Is it Thugger or Thugga? I never can remember which is the good one.
Bah, I condemn people as thugs when they act like thugs, it has nothing to do with their skin color. If the author is upset about the prevalence of those who are of his skin color being called thugs, he should get off the rump and go do something about it, and get them to stop acting like thugs.
Complaining that when one calls one black a thug all blacks are condemned. I’ll ask the hard ugly question: So what?
We can tell the difference between the behavior of a criminal and a fine upstanding citizen.
The problem is that among young black males, the RATE of criminal behavior is proportionally higher than every other group of people.
I don’t even blame blacks for that. I blame LIBERALS who have created the welfare plantations on which criminalism flourishes.
At least he understands that the issue is black culture, not being black, per se.
It’s why being Asian isn’t considered being a minority.
“There are a lot of black people like me now who grew up straddling two different racial worlds.”
His mistake is in thinking it’s any different for white people. White people must do the same thing.
Don't you remember all the white people who rioted when Timothy McVeigh was executed? < / sarcasm >
It goes both ways A-hole!
I'll start.
Thug / No Thug?
Umm, that is how America stayed great until now. People came from other parts of the world where the culture led them to be impoverished and opressed and adopted American culture to their benefit. His basic premis is that blacks should be able to act like thugs and still be treated the same way as people who do not act like thugs becuase being a thug is part of his culture. Basically the guy is black supremacist scum.
The left has always had a different standard for its favorite victim group.
When You Condemn One Black Man as a Thug You Condemn Us All
When You Condemn One White Man as a Racist You Condemn Us All
When You Condemn One Nazi as a Genocidal Maniac You Condemn Us All
When You Condemn One Woman as a Slut You Condemn Us All
When You Condemn One Priest as a Pedophile You Condemn Us All
When You Condemn One Homosexual as a Child Molester You Condemn Us All
When You Condemn One Man as a Domestic Abuser You Condemn Us All
Go for it, Vic! Choose to stand with the thugs. Thug’s R’ Us, apparently.
I’m not a “white man” first and foremost. I’m a moral and responsible human being. Others of the same type are “my people,” regardless of race, sex or religion.
Thug / No Thug?
What the hell is wrong with this fellow. If Brown and Martin, in particular, had refrained from assaulting people they'd still be alive today. Is the author in the habit of assaulting people? No? Then YES: Martin and Brown SHOULD have behaved more like him in order to avoid being killed. Looks like the author failed to learn logical thinking, or a respect for the truth.
“should have behaved exactly like me to avoid being killed.”
If it walks like a duck....
As far as I know, “no thug”.
You’re a big picture guy, aren’t you?
If you'd stop thinking of yourself as "black people" perhaps I could stop being forced to constantly think of myself as "white people," and we could start being people.
"Dad, you're my father. I'm your son. I love you. I always have and I always will. But you think of yourself as a colored man. I think of myself as a man." That was says 47 years ago. A white kid was silly enough to believe it, and has spent the bulk of his life trying to live it--and the people who won't let him are the descendants of the same people who told him 47 years ago that they wanted him to think of them that way.
Mr. Luckerson, you're my fellow citizen, and I am your fellow citizen. I love you with the love of my country, and the love of my God. But you think of yourself as a black man. I think of you, and of myself, as a man.
