After posting yet another disappointing quarter, McDonalds CEO Don Thompson said Tuesday the company hasnt been keeping up with the times and that changes are in store for its U.S. restaurants.
Thompson said that starting in January, McDonalds will simplify its menu to make room for restaurants to offer options that are best-suited for their regions. To offer greater customization, he also said the company planned to expand its Create Your Taste offering that lets people pick the buns and toppings they want on burgers by tapping a touchscreen. The program is currently being offered in Southern California, and McDonalds has said it will roll it out nationally in Australia. [ ]
The changes come as McDonalds continues to struggle with myriad problems. One of its biggest challenges in the U.S. is long-held perceptions around the freshness and quality of its ingredients. The chain has been fighting to boost sales as people gravitate toward foods they feel are more wholesome. As a result, people have been gravitating to places like Chipotle, which markets its ingredients as being of superior quality.

Sell something other than McDonald’s food?
OK, you saved me from making a post.
“lets people pick the buns and toppings they want on burgers by tapping a touchscreen.”
Hmmmmm...I wonder if they’re paying the touchscreen a living wage.
Don’t mess with my McDouble!!
If he wants to beat Chipotle, all he has to do is post a sign that reads:
CCW Patriots Welcome.
Bring Your little friend.
It would probably cut down on robberies and belligerent youts as well.
Will SEIU be fighting to “represent” the touch screen?
Chipotle is amazing. The menu is very simple and they give you so much food that you usually have to take home leftovers, and you can get really healthy meals there that taste great.
Very simple menu. The only problem is that there's always a line there, so the wait can be a little long.
That's a roundabout way of saying they are going to fire half their employees as soon as they can.
McDonalds is so stupid. Their problems began when they started kowtowing to the liberal mantra that fast food sucks and isn’t healthy. They took away everything that made their food taste good and substituted “healthy” alternatives.
McD’s needs to tell the liberals to FU-off. Start a Classic menu that reintroduces food as it was made in the past to include fries cooked in beef tallow.
But, alas. They won’t do this. They’ll keep running from the Democrats who are killing their sales model until they are finally out of business.
“To offer greater customization, he also said the company planned to expand its Create Your Taste offering that lets people pick the buns and toppings they want on burgers by tapping a touchscreen.”
Stealth move to begin phase-out of employees.
We got a Chipolte in Albuquerque... I can’t understand how it is so crowded when there a a million hole in the wall places here that are infinitely better.
One of the items on the McDonald’s touch screen should be an In-N-Out burger gift certificate. That would do well.
. . . while they “fight for $15” in vain.

Um...done by Burger King (which, AMAZINGLY, is STILL in business!) THIRTY YEARS AGO:
“Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don’t upset us...”

They have to use the touch screen, because human cashiers aren't good at random variations in their programming.
I’ve been to McDonalds maybe twice in seven years. Both times it is when I was on a long road trip and eating while I was driving.
Exactly.
Well I don't doubt that there are a million little restaurants, but in terms of fast food, I don't think there's anywhere else better.
One other problem though, is that they don't bus the tables very effectively. That's a turn-off when you are looking for a seat.
ITA There’s some weird flavor that permeates all their food.
