Athens (AFP) - Two stunning caryatid statues have been unearthed holding up the entrance to the biggest ancient tomb ever found in Greece, archaeologists said.
The two female figures in long-sleeved tunics were found standing guard at the opening to the mysterious Alexander The Great-era tomb near Amphipolis in the Macedonia region of northern Greece.

I think phillip’s tomb has already been found. I would wonder if it was Alexander’s if he had not been buried in Egypt.

Amphipolis doesn't seem likely for a Macedonian royal burial--it wasn't originally Macedonian (it was founded by the Athenians in 437 and became a Macedonian possession only during the reign of Philip II). It's well to the east of the heartland of the Macedonian kingdom. The historian Thucydides, an Athenian general at the time, was exiled because he failed to prevent the Spartans from taking Amphipolis in the winter of 424/423.
Great photos. Thanks! :)
Thanks, that is some great information.
I was a Classics major for a while and have to admit that I did not know that was why Thucydides was exiled.
Thucydides describes the capture of Amphipolis by Brasidas in book 4, chapters 102 to 108, and mentions in passing in book 5, chapter 26, that “it happened, too, that I was banished from my country for twenty years after my command at Amphipolis...”
I read “The Peloponnesian War” while I was still in high school. Just too much information to remember 50 years later.
My old prof at Troy, Dr. Agnew would have probably been able to tell any detail of the war. He was possibly the smartest man I ever knew.

Maybe it’s Leonidas’ tomb.
Thanks EveningStar.
One’s not a bad looker, but the other one looks like someone hammered her face with a frying pan.
There’s a new article about the latest find, a third chamber in the tomb, arched ceiling.
