Cynical distrust is characterized by the belief that others are motivated by selfish interests. Though it may appear to be merely a "glass is half empty" point of view, researchers say having this viewpoint increases chances of developing dementia.
The researchers, led by Anna-Malia Tolppanen, PhD, of the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, publish their findings in the journal Neurology.
They say that cynicism has been previously linked with other health problems, including heart disease, but this study is the first to examine the link between cynicism and dementia.
Compared with their low-level counterparts, individuals with high levels of cynical distrust are three times more likely to develop dementia, researchers say.
Well, that pretty much does it for Freepers. It's all over unless you change your ways and believe ALL that 'Dear Leader' and his minions have to say......
It's off to the government 'home' confinement for Freepers.
I’m doomed. It’s all a plot by the Dems.
Sorry, but cynicism is also a product of learning that there are a lot of idiots out there.
Most of them either work in the gubmit, voted for the Obamadork...or both.
And, after all, if one is not cynical about liberalism, one has much more serious cognitive problems.
Cynics say not that other people CAN be influenced by selfishness, but that they MUST be influenced by selfishness.
Sometimes the cynics save themselves from disappointment that way, but they can also let a lot of goodness just fall on the floor.
“What’s it all about... Alfie?”
Classic Christian doctrine tells us we have something far more complex at hand. A fallen humanity, of which any individual soul can be saved if it chooses to accept the salvation, but even if it is, it won’t be perfect in this mortal coil.
Oversimplifications simply fail (I hope that is not an oxymoron).
I am done for.
Also, this is about Alzheimer’s disease, a particular kind of dementia. Not about dementia in general.
The bad cynic is the one who dismisses everything as incorrigibly selfish.
I’ve seen it traced to “doglike.” But “Bitchy” does seem more apropos.
And yes, people can get pretty “damned” small and mean. Dogs are sometimes used as metaphors with a negative connotation in the bible (for example a group of people attacking someone who did nothing to deserve it).
Of course all generalizations are wrong :-). We are not speaking of the loyal dog who would die for his owner, etc.
Our problems come from sin, in classic Biblical and Christian understanding. God intended people to be caught up in His love, but He permitted a choice rather than turn them into puppets without a will.
When it dawns on a person that the Lord will fight on behalf of a loyal follower’s soul, even though he could not deserve it, a significant breakthrough has been made in the situation. This fight is what the cross of Christ is about.
But, man, hope in just what?
Got to get your target accurate. As C. S. Lewis put it, a voyage that was intended to go to New York City would fail if it actually ended in Calcutta.
Yeah, right.
I doubt either Herodotus or Cyrus were called to Jesus.
I came to post “I’m Doomed”....and then discovered its all of FReeperdom!
Yep.
