From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Thanks for posting that. It’s nice and condensed. The one I have in my file is about 3 pages. Overall, the best temperature is about 77 degrees. Not too cold and not too hot. It’s the Goldilocks temperature.LOL

My indoor tomato plant is going like gangbusters. We have lots of green tomatoes on it, and have eaten several as they matured.

I can now join the ranks of the cucuzza germinators! I have one peeping through the dirt in a cup in the windowsill. I think it’s a 72 hour soak/nail file treatment seed. Now I’m in trouble - have to find room for it in the garden! I did find a plastic piece of lattice that I can use for it to climb on, so that’s a start. Quite chilly last night .... in the 40’s. That’s going to slow down everything in the garden .... very weird, cool, wet spring with a couple of 90 degree days (one day was a 94 degree record temp) thrown in here and there just to cause confusion.

I had strawberries for awhile, but it's so much work keeping the weeds out I gave up. I'm going to add some planter boxes after I finish the deck railing. That might be a good place to try again with the strawberries. I'm making good progress, should be finished by the end of the week.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Also spent some time yesterday helping Mrs. Augie fix up her flowerbed. The chickens had taken it over for their digging/dusting spot and just making a wreck of it. Weed cloth and lava rock took care of that. It was quite entertaining watching them try to figure out what to do with the lava rock.

Did you keep track of how many days it took? I think of my three in the garden, I forgot to keep the one tiny one with no true leaves covered, and it fried...So far, that equals 2 alive plants out of twelve seeds. I check the ones under the grow lamp, five times a day I think, and of those, nada.

I think next we will have to try incantations, pixie dust, something we're not doing exactly right to become Cucuzza Masters.

********************************************
I started soaking the seeds the morning of May 2nd. They went into cups with potting soil (after I used an emory board to file the edges of the seeds) on May 6. Today, I noticed a seedling peeping through the dirt. It could have been peeping through yesterday, but I didn’t check yesterday so I’m not sure. I’d say about 12 days from going in the cup to leaves peeping through. I’m going to keep it inside until it has at least 4 leaves, maybe more, depending on how big it’s getting in that cup. Also, I think I put two seeds in the one cup so I might have a second one coming through ... could I be so lucky(?) .... time will tell. “Cucuzzi Masters” .... I love it! :-)

Miracle Grow Potting Soil mix is all I use for containers. It feeds the plants for six months. The second time I use that soil I stick Jobe’s container spikes in it to jack it up.

You’re telling me. One of the chickens flapped it’s way into the enclosed tomato patch and ate all my little green Roma and Cherry tomato’s. I thought deer were bad.............

Ever try lining a garden box with 1/4" galvanized chicken wire to keep them out?

It's a 12ft x 12ft raised bed that was built around a 3 ton pile of horse manure a few years back. It'll be difficult.

I was thinking about explosives ;)

My birds just kick all the rock out of their way and continue doing what they want. I have a short path out my back door that I laid a base of 51/50 rock on, and they still move it.

You may find their antics irritating, but your chickens sound awesome..little Chuck Norris Chickens.

Cool pictures. Love the deck. We have never had any weeds in our strawberry plants. We do plant them very close together.

Our first patch was a square about 8ft x 8ft. Now we have two of those round pyramid style patches. One we bought from a seed catalog. The other hubby built for a heck of a lot less money.

We cover them with straw when the weather gets cold, and take it off in the Spring.

The chart zynchs up with the chart that I have, and mine specifically states that the temps refer to soil temperature.

The temps are soil temps, not ambient.
