I’ve looked into this. It seems that for every solid (major university) study that supports the coconut oil theory, there are a couple of studies that don’t.

My med terms teacher mentioned to the class the other day that Alzheimer’s is now being thought of as Diabetes 3...just like this guy stated in the video.

I got some coconut oil a few months ago at the health food store. I haven’t started taking it yet, but I’ve heard it’s good for keratosis pilaris. I think I’m going to start taking this. I would mention it to my mom to give to my dad who has Alzheimer’s, but she would resist doing anything that helps. Maybe I’ll mention it to my brother and he can buy some while he’s up here visiting.

Wish I could get my Mom to eat it...but, she hates coconut. I actually cook in Coconut oil for just about everything....rub it on my skin, and use it in my morning coffee, with cinnamon. Yum. (I don’t like cream/milk in my coffee.)

I want to try it on my “progressive” brother-—perhaps he’ll start thinking straight and become a conservative.

Been cooking with coconut oil for 2 years - only fats I use is coconut oil, home rendered organic lard and organic butter (I also make ghee from butter.

I get my coconut oil from Swanson's Vitamins on line - can get a 54 oz. jar for about the same money as 16 oz at local health food store.

Swanson's has free shipping offers regularly - and then’ is when I order heavy stuff, like the coconut oil, Bob's Red Mill flours/mixes, etc.

I can't, however, down straight coconut oil. I gag. But I use it in generous amounts when cooking - fry eggs almost swimming in it, heat up my pork fried rice in liberal amounts, pop corn in it, mix with butter to put on popped corn and pancakes and crepes, French toast, etc.

I'm a great grandmother - can do the crosswords - doing good so far. (I think :)....)

Here in the Philippines, we use nothing but pure coconut oil.
It is sold by numerous vendors in the town’s central market, packaged in a poly bag, containing about one pint. I had just transferred a bag of it to our plastic oil bottle, prior to reading this post. I also buy natural brown sugar, packaged the same way.

By the way- NO other oil cleans up as easy as coconut oil from your stove or your dishes. It’s totally non-greasy.

No doubt coconut oil is good for the brain. And maybe it would be good for those with an early dementia dx. But please don’t even bother trying to shove it down the throats of your loved ones who are moderately or more impaired with Alzheimers. It’s too hard to do. Some times they don’t even want it in a smoothie, And no doubt it means a whole change in diet, focus on clean, non sweet foods, etc. I am very into healthy eating but if I even tried to change both my parents’ diets at this point (both have Alzheimers) it would be unpleasant for them. They look very forward to their sweets and treats after meals, and they would have to be challenged to eat anything with coconut oil in it.

You need to get several tablespoons in daily, and their caregivers already have to work hard to get them to bathe and take walks and other necessary things. Why give caregivers any more hard work to do? And why not let my parents have their little pleasures, when so much else has been stolen from them?

There isn’t a lot of evidence that coconut oil can cure alzheimers, or reverse neuro damage. However, adding it to our diet can only be good, especially if there is even a chance it can help with prevention.

That’s a little hard for me to believe. I had my mother taking coconut oil for about two years and her Alzheimer’s continued to march right along.

If you don’t like the cocomut oil to ingest for dementia, you can always make chocolate bars out of it. :)

3 Ingredient Chocolate Bars

Ingredients
1/4 cup coconut oil (measure after melting)
1/4 cup cocoa powder or cacao powder
2-3 T maple syrup or honey

Instructions
In a small bowl, whisk all ingredients well. Make sure there are no lumps. It should only take a minute.
Pour the mixture into molds. If you use chocolate bar molds, it should take about an hour for everything to firm up. If you use something larger, it may take a bit longer.

This chocolate has a mild coconut taste, but it is not overwhelming. These bars are best when they are stored in the freezer.

For a delicious low-carb chocolate treat:

Mix equal parts Coconut Oil, Cocoa Powder and Whipping Cream. Add stevia for sweetener. Optionally add a little vanilla extract.

This makes an easy way to eat a lot of coconut oil.

Coconut oil melts at 77 degrees. So you might need to heat it before mixing the ingredients.

In warmer weather, it is similar to Nutella. In cooler weather, or if you refrigerate it, it is just chocolate.
