The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

It all sounds great. I too love the smell of lilacs. I have never been able to get one going. We have tried all manner of stuff in our front yard, but it always dies.
The soil is just not as good as the back yard, and it is a kinda north east exposure. Even though we have worked on the soil, we still had no success for some reason.
We tried several types of nut trees. Rose of Shannon, Moutain Laurel, Hydranga, winter green, boxwood, and more, everything just dies.
I have a couple of raised flower beds with the spring flowers and bulbs, roses, day lilies, iris, and ground phlox. We just let the dandelions grow, since they seem to like it, and they are edible.LOL
I heard that! I would have heated a little water up on the stove probably. I hate cold water bathing.LOL
Potatoes in the raised beds are doing well, and are all mulched with straw, so I won't need to add any straw for a while yet to those.
Garlic is not doing well this year. Not sure what the deal is. The bulbs are not forming, and they are turning prematurely yellow. I have done what I could think of, so I'll have to do a little more research. They may simply not have had as much water regularly as they should have, missing some sort of nutrient.
I have moved the peas and lettuce pots out doors for now, it a location sheltered a bit from wind. It was 75 degrees here today until this afternoon, we had a small shower and it cooled off.
Thunderstorms and severe weather were active today North and West of us. Kansas City, Joplin, St. Louis and Swansee,Il were all on the news this afternoon. Some with large hail.
We are heading into a week of storms, so I hope they all continue to take a path that avoids us, except for some rain. Can do without lightening strikes, hail, and high winds/tornado.

Well, it does save on the electric bills. I could do it if I had to, though. Had to in my youth, but so far have been able to live with the luxury of hot water on tap.
He doesn't even think about it ,because he does it naturally (learned behavior)
We have gotten at least an inch so far and more coming down. Hopefully not too much. Pull the potted peppers in out of it earlier.
It sounds like the major issue affecting your growing season is the wind
Consider natural wind block like a hedge, lee-ward side of the house , or a stone wall.
Consider a contrived un-natural wind block like a wind blocking fence ,a cold frame, or a greenhouse, or a "solar-room" to the house.
Remember the first rule of realestate : "location, location , location ... "
When I went salmon fishing in New Foundland two years ago, with the guide we walked on to the top of the valley
He advised us that the trees that we were walking through, although only about 2 1/2 feet tall, were over 40 years old
as the wind and weather had stunted their growth
I never questioned his counsel, as wind can be quite unforgiving and relentless.
There is a reason why the NewFies call home : " The Rock".
and the reason why NewFies wear knee length rubber boots , just as our kids were "Nikes "(sneakers).
Which is why we live where we do!!!
As to wind blocks, we've got about all we can have. We have a pie shaped 2 acre piece and old growth forest is our north and east block.

I’m not clicking on that - every grasshopper I see will be mush. Maybe they are good for the composter after smashing.

They’re good for feeding chickens or fish with.
