In a new national poll on America's scientific acumen, more than half of respondents said they were "not too confident" or "not at all confident" that "the universe began 13.8 billion years ago with a big bang." The poll was conducted by GfK Public Affairs & Corporate Communications.
Scientists were apparently dismayed by this news, which arrives only a few weeks after astrophysicists located the first hard evidence of cosmic inflation.
But when compared to results from other science knowledge surveys, 51 percent isn't too shameful -- or surprising.
Other polls on America's scientific beliefs have arrived at similar findings. The "Science and Engineering Indicators" survey -- which the National Science Foundation has conducted every year since the early 1980s -- has consistently found only about a third of Americans believe that "the universe began with a huge explosion."
In 2010, the NSF poll rephrased the question, asking whether the following statement was true: "According to astronomers, the universe began with a big explosion." When reworded, more Americans agreed, suggesting more respondents are aware of the science than originally suggested -- they just don't believe the science.

I don’t see why scientists were dismayed; they ought to be overjoyed. I remember how they howled that the Big Bang could not possibly be correct after it was pointed out that the Big Bang actually lent a huge amount of credibility to Creationism. Of course, they have not found anything to replace it that makes a lick of sense, but they still opposed their pet theory after that epiphany.
The big bang theory insists that during the big bang, all matter and even light itself ignored the fundamental laws of physics and cast itself across tens of billions of light years in a trillionth of a trillionth of a second.
Sounds more like a God-created universe to me.

There was no Big Bang. There is no inflation.
The Universe recycles and the Universe is constantly in motion. Both expanding and contraction, twisting and bending.
The modern theories will catch up with this as more evidence is found.

Well, there is an alternative ( but not very popular view ) called Plasma Cosmology.
Plasma cosmology is a non-standard cosmology whose central postulate is that the dynamics of ionized gases and plasmas play important if not dominant roles in the physics of the universe beyond the Solar System.
Some general concepts about plasma cosmology have been attributed to Hannes Alfvén, who was awarded the 1970 Nobel prize for inventing magnetohydrodynamics (MHD).
Alfvén proposed the use of plasma scaling to extrapolate the results of laboratory experiments and space plasma physics observations and scale them over many orders-of-magnitude up to the largest observable objects in the universe.
Plasma cosmology is rejected by astrophysicists and cosmologists because, as described by its proponents, it does not provide as well-matched an account of the observations of astrophysical and cosmological phenomena as the accepted astrophysical and cosmological theories do.
I believe it was more like a balloon rapidly inflating and expanding rather than an exploding.
To think of the universe as always being here, always existing, would be just as incredible IMO.

No. Per Big Bang theory, the universe was about the size of a grain of sand or less than a millimeter in diameter at the end of the inflationary period.

Scientists had a “consensus” that the universe was eternal, until red shift proved it was expanding.
Most Americans can’t do basic Algebra or describe a single law of Thermodynamics.
