There are certain factors you should consider when living through an extended emergency. It is common for your physical, mental and emotional state to be affected following a disaster. On top of that, you are hungry due to rationing food portions and still have to continue daily activities, physical labor, parenting, etc. If you havent put thought into the right types of food and the amounts needed to see you through the ordeal, then you could be setting yourself up for deficiencies in your diet.
Repeatedly, I have told readers interested in leading a self reliant lifestyle to simulate a disaster at home so that your family can practice living through it using the supplies you have. This creates a safe environment to prepare and train family members for what they might expect and help you learn what you may need for the future. Using the contents of your emergency pantry is no different. In fact, you should be using your pantries regularly to ensure the food you store is as fresh as possible. In my cookbook, The Preppers Cookbook, I list 25 must have foods for your pantries and also touched on what to expect in an emergency situation when you are rationing your supplies.

One thing I keep seeing missing is salt.
Salt is essential for survival and goes a LONG way to making anything taste better.
Add some multi-vitamin and mineral supplements.
Rolled oats are another good grain to keep on hand. They’re very high in minerals and are easy to cook and dress up so as not to be too boring.
You can put about ANYTHING in oatmeal.
Trust me on that one.
I don’t care for snails either. Nor do bugs look yummy. I have not taken an official foraging class, but when I go hiking with friends, we share plant knowlege. A foraging class is probably an excellent investment.
You will find beef and chicken bouillon at Rainy Day Foods, which if properly stored, will last 25 years.

there’s something about potatoes that helps keep weight on.
Salt will also make an excellent bartering item......and it is cheap to store. One pound is about 50 cents. Stock up now.
Forgot to add......one can of Spam has about the same calories as an MRE
MREs can be flavored up with hot sauce packets from Del Taco or Taco Bell or any other preferred restaurant.
Salt can be stored in canning jars with used lids as it is just sealing to keep out moisture, not for preservation process as in canning.
It keeps it from clumping together.
I am so rationed.
Your wife is a very smart woman. Just saying
the soft shtf has begun.
the violent/hard shtf has not.
Spam did feed the Soviet army during the last half of WW2.
Good list...Why popcorn?...that is all I do not have.
BISTO beef gravy base made in UK. It can be added to anything for meat flavor. Depending on water used it will also thicken.
It is in many grocery stores or specialty shops. Shows only production date but I opened one of the containers recently and it shows over 3 years on my shelf. It is a round container slightly smaller than vegetable tin. (Foil and cardboard container granular contents-possibly no oil to spoil?)
Edible wild foods are in several books. Boy Scouts have a small booklet too.
I have had mine about 50 years! We loved making wild teas over the campfire with Girl Scouts.
I have no earthly idea..true to my tagline, I didn't read the article.
In my imaginary scenarios for SHTF, I don't envision myself wasting precious fuel resources, to pop up a batch, though.
In my head, I can't imagine the people in Sarajevo during the war, who were burning books, and furniture to keep warm, thinking, "If only we could pop some popcorn in the fireplace while burning the dining room chairs to keep from freezing, things wouldn't seem so bad."
<theres something about potatoes that helps keep weight on.
Not really. This man ate nothing but potatoes in protest of Michelle Obama wanting to take potatoes out of WIC and school lunch programs. See: http://www.20potatoesaday.com/
If you put all kinds of fat on them, yes, you’ll probably gain weight. A plain baked potato with spices is a wonderful source of nutrition and very filling.
Popcorn stored properly will last a Loooooong time. It can be grind into meal or popped as a treat.
You are wrong. I remember Selco telling how he in a friend were out on a run at night they had to hid because of some trouble. They accidently found a case of some kind of very poor chocolate bars. Something that during normal times you wouldn’t bother with because of their poor quality. But it was heaven to them. They ate some and grinned and smile and for a short time their trobles were forgotten.
