Amputee veteran turned away by Starbucks employees who wouldn't let his service dog in store

Still adjusting to his life as an amputee, doctors discovered Mr Baer had bone cancer after a non-combat related injury in Iraq in 2009.

His left leg had to be amputated from the knee down and was given a physical service dog, Beanz, through a national organization called Canine Companions for Independence.

However, as soon as he walked through the door of the coffee chain, the trouble started.

A Starbucks employee approached him as he entered with Beanz, his service dog. 'You can't have dogs in here,' the worker yelled at him.

It was in your face, loud and bold. I got really nervous. I was shaking because I was being confronted,' he said in a posting on Facebook.

Mr Baer explained that Beanz was a service dog. The employee countered, 'you're not blind!' to which he replied 'I know and she isn't a seeing eye dog, she's a physical service dog.'

Beanz had her bright blue service vest and working collar on at the time of the encounter.

'Well what does the dog do?' the staffer demanded to know.

Upon explaining the ways in which his dog performed tasks for him, the war veteran was not prepared for the employees response: 'Why can't you do that yourself?' he was asked.

Mr Baer says he was humiliated and embarrassed in front of a crowd of spectators.

Eventually, he spoke with another employee and got his point across. The employee who stopped him at the door later apologized for what happened.

“It’s so easy to boycott a coffee chain with lousy overpriced coffee that expects you to speak coffee-language when you place an order.”

To this day, if I go into a Starbucks, I order small, medium or large. If they don’t understand what I am talking about, I remind them nice and loud.

“The large coffee goes int the big cup.”

Most people who use starbucks...are the same pretentious LIEberals who frequent Whole Foods.

Their noses are so far in the air...it’s laughable.

'Well what does the dog do?' the staffer demanded to know.

"Well, he tears the throat out of obnoxious marxist baristas like yourself, spits it out on the floor, then urinates on the still-twitching remains...that's what he does."

Have never been in Starbucks and as a VN vet I feel for the guy.
On the other hand, I wonder how the hell millions of WWII, Korea and VN vets got along without service dogs?

I think this is blown out of proportion. If the guy was a veteran, he should have been able to take some guff from some metrosexual who was confused about service dogs. The store apologized, as did the employee in question. Seems like the vet could have manned up and said, "OK, no problem" instead of acting like a squealin' li'l lib.

Sometimes, you gotta think "what would Robert Mitchum do in this situation?" It wouldn't be to go crying to the media.

Just so you know what you’re missing, Starbucks buys ordinary coffee beans, over-roasts them to nearly the point of burning them and then uses the bitter, burned coffee to make a weak brew that tastes strong because it is so bitter. It’s the worst coffee I’ve ever been asked to pay for.

Who wants overpriced burnt coffee?

Ew.

Now, their baked goods used to be pretty good. Haven’t been in a starbucks in over a decade though.

We all know how the left would respond to this move if the discriminated against were a gay / black / latino / democrat voter.

The apology would be insufficient. They’d protest until the guy was fired and likely would push for civil charges.

"what would Robert Mitchum do in this situation?"

He'd probably light a smoke and be asked to leave.

The employee countered, 'you're not blind!' to which he replied 'I know'....

Employee was master of the obvious, here.

Surprised that they were able to be hired, being this dumb/insensitive.

Or if they had Mooselimb tendencies.

I too have been boycotting Starbucks since they first said they would honor the carry laws in WA state( home of their headquarters and flagship store)then changed their silly minds.
But this story seems a bit suspect, mainly because there’s no indication where it takes place. Real stories have datelines, urban legends don’t.
Also at the risk of sounding mean, there are fake veterans out there

OK, I stand corrected. Now Ive read it and it was Houston. There’s still something about this story that isn’t right, though.

I’ve been boycotting them since I did a cup/price analysis vis a vis my own Mr. Coffee.

Using organic coffee no less I have a lower price/cup. With organic cream and organic sugar or stevia to boot.

And it’s hot in my own kitchen, drunk in my jammies and I don’t have to get OUT in the cold and nasty weather to get that overpriced burnt coffee. I think the nearest one is about 25 or 30m from my house anyways. So add $15 to the price of that cup just for the gas to/from there and sitting in traffic.

No comparison.
