Seven Democratic lawmakers are pushing to ban the use of electronic cigarettes on the grounds of the Capitol complex as part of a wider campaign against them.
Led by the Senate's second-ranking Democrat, Dick Durbin (Ill.), the group called on rulemaking committees in both chambers to include e-cigarettes in the Capitol's existing ban on smoking in public places and near building entrances.
"Given preliminary [federal] research finding harmful chemicals present in e-cigarettes, measures should be taken to ensure that the public is equally protected from the potential dangers posed by e-cigarettes and their vapor," the lawmakers wrote Tuesday.
Via a spokesman, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) told The Hill on Wednesday that he would pursue the rules change.
The letter marks the latest in a series of actions by congressional Democrats to curb e-cigarettes.
Four of the seven senators included in Tuesday's letter accused the Golden Globe awards last month of "glamorizing" e-cigarettes after the show featured two celebrities smoking them, including "Veep" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
The same group has also urged the Obama administration to speed up its efforts to crack down on the devices.
Mostly unregulated at the federal level, the e-cigarettes vaporize a nicotine solution in order to simulate regular smoking.
Supporters say that "vaping" is a healthier alternative to smoking because it leaves out the noxious chemicals found in many conventional cigarettes. Some also say e-cigarettes have helped them quit regular smoking.
But critics argue that the battery-powered devices deliver a more powerful dose of nicotine per puff, posing a serious health risk.
Tuesday's letter was signed by Sens. Durbin, Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Edward Markey (D-Mass.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.).
I am occasionally confronted about my smoking by quitters who seem to me to resent my not having joined the club. It pi**es them off that I'm still enjoying a good smoke.
One woman, a perfect stranger, said, "don't you want to live?"
Instead of mumbling vague apologies about my moral weakness, I asked her how she dared ask such a question of someone she didn't even know. It felt good.
No taxy no likey
“I havent tried e-cigs. I am battling now to stay way from the hand to mouth part of the habit. “
I found that to be *the* hardest part ... so difficult that I use e-cigs with zero nicotine liquid.
While I feel like a complete idiot for not having the will power to overcome this stupid addiction, using the e-cig is certainly helping me beat that problem.
My other problem is that I actually enjoy smoking from time to time. I just don’t like it enough to do it habitually like I did in the good old days :-). Still, I’d choose better quality of life over smoking any day of the week :-).
What if the pres is up there and wants a smoke.

“No taxy no likey”
Yep ... and the products are everywhere ... if they tax the regularly available ones like Blu, people will simply order them from other places.
Personally, I think these D’s are doing the bidding of the tobacco lobbyists ... I don’t think this is a tax issue just yet ... I stress yet ... anti-smoking drug pharmacy company lobbyists are probably a close second in the “you better fix this” group.
No two people are the same, but you can do it. I quit on April 19, 2001 and have never looked back. Fortunately for me, I used a product that worked. Can’t even remember the name, but I took it for eight or ten days before stopping, as recommended. It worked.
I’ll try and see if I can find it on Google.
Today CVS announced that they were stopping all sales of tobacco and someone I was speaking with hailed it as great news. I told her that it was great news for their competitors and asked her if we were still living in America where people could live as they chose.
Here it is. http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/bupropion-hydrochloride-zyban-for-quitting-smoking
I hope someone will find that it works for them as well as it did for me.
I heard that about CVS. There is one a couple of blocks from my house and a Walgreens directly across from my house, so smokers won’t go to CVS, will go to Walgreens.
Exactly what I told this woman, also I told her that the customers lost by CVS would not be just the smokers but also people like me who are sick and tired of controlling tactics. The government says they want everyone to stop smoking while at the same time heavily taxing smokers to pay for their little social programs. And here in Taxifornia we have idiot voters blindly following idiot celebrities like “Meathead” Rob Reiner.
This is really their cause of the day?..they’d be better off to keep trying to change the name of the Redskins.
Shesh, liberals have nothing better to do!
What brand of batteries did they use? I imagine if you get imports of batteries and e liquid from China you might find some of that. I bet the tobacco companies funded the research.
Wow, I just googled and formaldehyde is found in normal human breath. So, I guess next we will not be able to exhale in Washington.
Libs are nazis about tobacco and all for legalizing Marijuana. It makes no sense to me. Further, “vaping” causes no third party harm as regular cigarettes are reputed to do. It makes no sense to ban e-cigs unless you have an irrational hatred for scented water vapor.
Not necessarily. Some time back Walgreen's had a deal with the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation for "surveying" the customers who purchased tobacco products. Walgreen's require ID and would scan it and send the info to RWJF.
My guess is RWJF money is involved with the CVS decision as well, because they are starting a quit smoking campaign in conjunction with getting rid of tobacco products.
The portfolio that provides RWJF with the majority of its funding is made up of Johnson & Johnson stock - guess what J&J makes? Smoking cessation products.
I used the high nicotine for one year. Am now on the medium for 6 months and then will go to low for another 6 months. After that i am done with smoking period.......and ecigs helped me do it!
