The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
I called the instructor of a landscaping class at the local Junior College for a student to spade a 8 X 30 patch of new ground and he barely knew which end of the shovel to hold on to. I discharged him after 30 minutes and called instructor and told him to spend one day to two teaching the basics of hand tools..
I shot a possum tonight, and I don’t know if she was the Possum Queen or what but it sounds like the other possums are practicing for a counter attack under my house.
They’ve been waking me up in the wee hours banging around the shower pipes in the wall above the bathtub, which is known as the luxury suite in possum lingo.
Last night I went out, and could hear possums or raccoons mixing it up (mating, probably) in the storm drain on the corner. Unlwss, it was giant rats in the storm drain, but I wish we’d get about five inches of rain to send them all towards the creek.
Carl Sandberg had it wrong ..It shouldn’t have been rats, lizards, and crows..It should’ve been rats, possums, and raccoons.

Our "mist" came and went. Watching the water going into the rain barrel last night, it was not much more than when you forget to turn a faucet all the way off. I have maybe 3 inches in my rain barrel counting since the first of the year.
Glad you got that much rain.
I need to ask you a question. The time before when you sent me the tobacco seed it was in a company envelope. I looked at that before I planted these news seeds from you. The envelope said to put the seeds on TOP of the soil and that is what I did. Was that wrong? Let me know right away if they need to be UNDER the soil.

OK, I didn’t want to kill these.
32 degrees here at 9:30 am. It is supposed to get to 21 tonight. Yesterday afternoon, I set up some of those frost caps you fill with water..one side would collapse and spill water everywhere. Finally got them to work.
I think Marcella’s moving blankets would be a whole lot easier. This weather is totally unmotivating.
Shot another possum last night. Hopefully, that is all the ones who live under the house..There’s still one in the eaves. And as soon as I get rid of them, I’m sure that more will move in.

It is 12:15 pm, temp is 44.7
Supposed to get to 25 tonight. I’ll put on the moving blankets by 5-6 pm. The next couple of days are the pits:

I’m on a capsule of 50K IU every 3 weeks or so. It’s a prescription. I supplement with 1K pills on weeks 2 and 3.

You must have been very low on D, too. Since mine wasn’t prescription, I kept forgetting to get it. My prescriptions are on automatic refill and I get a call from Walgreens that I have prescriptions to pick up. I’ll go by the window and not go in the store most of the time.
It was 10, but after 2 yrs it went up to 34. I abstain from supplements for a couple of weeks before the test. It has helped a lot for immune support.
Did I mention that I'm ready for spring?

It’s 33.6 here at 9:15, and nothing is falling.
Eighteen is really low, I hope you are staying warm.
There will be modifications to the north side of the house this year. Eventually, I'll turn this place from a wind tunnel to a snug little hovel.

Lol, I call my house the hell hovel. It's 23 outside, and 63 inside, with the exception of the kitchen which is full of cats. It's 42 in the greenhouse with the heat lamp on. There were a few flakes of snow last night about 10pm when I went out to look for possums.
My wife tried out the Zoodler last night at suppertime. She ran a tater or two through it trying two different blades. One made thin slices, kinda like thin flat crescent shaped fries. I guess it was a noodle blade, the other was a spiral cutter, it made spiral slices very thin. That came out like tater chips. They were nice and crunchy. We will be doing the chips again. We will slice some onions through that first blade and batter for onion rings. There was a BBQ place in our hometown that served onion rings sliced thin, battered, fried, and flipped out of the basket in a loaf style. Not your regular rings, but very tasty. We will duplicate them.
In other news, SIL killed an 8 point buck this morning going to work, with no damage to his truck. I wonder how far he had to swerve to hit the deer. lol He had a huge grin on his face in the picture.

I want a slicer that will slice veggies to do a stir fry. You have now run a potato and onion through using different blades. Would one or both of those blades cut the onion and other veggie in a way that would work for a stir fry?
