Some hate Disney and some might hate this film.
I liked it.
I never said it was. In the referenced Harlan Ellison video, he reiterated that Travers loathed the finished product. Not mentioned by Ellison was that she even asked Disney himself to remove the animated bits as the film was premiering, with Walt exclaiming that it was a bit late for that. How much of that was even mentioned in the film, I don’t know (according to Ellison, it apparently wasn’t).
It’s why I couldn’t understand how they could even make this film, since there was no real happy ending — sure, we got A film, and a great one at that, but we were also denied what could’ve been many more follow ups, and the permanent estrangement of Travers from having them filmed (indeed, she only later agreed to allow it performed in the theater - so long as it had nothing to do with the “Disneyfication” of her work).
Although I was born 10 years (to the day) after its release, I consider it one of the film greats (even if it is marred by Dick Van Dyke’s “accent problem”, when the great Tommy Steele should’ve played Bert). I have to ask you, for one who was around for its release, what do you personally consider films to be “not awful” as compared to it ?

(I) He's an openly gay, Hollywood multi-billionaire mogul----liberal to the core. David Geffen was an early supporter of Obama and raised $1.3 million for him in a star-studded Beverly Hills fundraiser.
On February 21, 2007, in an interview with NYT's Maureen Dowd, Geffen described Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bill Clinton in unflattering terms: "Everybody in politics lies, but the Clintons do it with such ease, it's troubling."
Geffen told Dowd that Hillary Clinton was "incredibly polarizing" and that Bill Clinton as "reckless", casting doubt on those who say Clinton has become a different person since leaving office.
Could not agree more.
(2) Three-time Oscar winner director Oliver Stone could not be more leftist. He has cavorted w/ Hugo Chavez and espouses leftist positions that make one shudder.
Yet Stone endorsed Ron Paul's 2012 candidacy (only Paul's foreign policies--not the domestic).
Stone can veer of the lefty reservation without getting bruised by the Hollywood steamroller----three Academies give him extraordinary power.
Stone's megahit "wall Street" even had a happy conservative ending---the greedsters went to jail.
On my “to-watch” list.
Knowing the real story, behind this marijuana-haze created story, I won’t go see it.

When my kids were young, we used to have a movie night on Saturday nights. I tried to get good movies I enjoyed from my childhood. I brought home Swiss Family Robinson and my son, who was about 9 at the time, had a fit because “this looks stupid!” I asked him to watch it anyway and it turned out to be one of his favorites. It’s a great adventure movie. He’d probably watch it today if he had the chance (he’s now 27).
I really liked the film. They did a great job of recreating the early 1960’s in LA using the actual locations, including the Walt Disney Studios that have not changed since those days. Paul Giamatti was wonderful, as were the actors portraying the Shermans.
Normally I would avoid his films but this one has a lot more in it than him.

Never knew that P.Travers adopted one twin but not his twin brother on advice from an astrologist and kept that fact secret from the adopted twin.
I never read any of Travers’ books, so am wondering what kind of “Mary Poppins” did Travers want represented on the screen. What was Mary Poppins like in her books?

I enjoyed it thoroughly as an adult film.
The movie explains a lot.
She was a conflicted woman.

If I limited my entertainment to pure conservatives there would be precious little to entertain me.
It is made very clear in Mr Banks.
In fact the entire premise of the movie is that Travers loathes Disney, and is fearful of how he will butcher her story.
I’m not a big fan of “The Sound Of Music.” But it’s far superior to MP. MP is just a load of gibberish for kids. I compare it to a Saturday morning cartoon show for five year olds. C,mon...Dick Van Dyke dancing with penguins??!! Give me a break. No wonder the author hated it.
P.L. Travers went nuts about all that stuff.
