Al Goldstein, the scabrous publisher whose Screw magazine pushed hard-core pornography into the cultural mainstream, died on Thursday at a nursing home in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. He was 77.
The cause was believed to be renal failure, his lawyer, Charles C. DeStefano, said.
Mr. Goldstein did not invent the dirty magazine, but he was the first to present it to a wide audience without the slightest pretense of classiness or subtlety.

Every description of him makes it quite clear he is foul, profane, brutally cruel to his staff and friends, and constantly floating in what could charitably be called a cloud of noxiousness. But at least he’s consistent. “
And given what we have to deal with on a daily basis in positions of authority all over the nation, I think I’d prefer dealing with an Al Goldstein, because at least you’d know he was rotten to the core and not just lying to make you think otherwise.
I hope he found the Lord before he died.
