And a Johns Hopkins grad told my father that cigarettes probably wouldn’t hurt him and his ulcers were best treated with a creamy, fatty diet. It was the third heart attack that killed my dad

When I was a kid, Hadacol was popular. It had so much alcohol in it that people liked it for that reason only.

The RDAs of vitamins are rather arbitrary. More vitamins than some minimum are probably helpful in some sense. But sometimes lights at the end of tunnels turn out to be the headlamps of oncoming trains... perhaps surfeits of vitamins might facilitate body wear in some fashion. And none of our mortal bodies are permanent anyhow. The all things in moderation theory has a lot to be said for it.

If you hadn't noticed, all vitamin supplements reduced their vitamin A content to no more than 5000 IU's per day as there is evidence that along term intake of high doses of vitamin A and beta-carotene can increase the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.

So all multivitamins are exactly the same?

If it wasn’t for the fact that many of our processed foods are vitamin fortified, we definitely would be vitamin deficient.

Also, I know of no one who takes vitamins to prevent heart attacks or cancer. People usually take vitamins to help prevent infections, boost metabolism, and reduce anemia and hypertension.

I think this doctor is uninformed, but that isn’t surprising.

Until I see a “cast in concrete, settled law” report that proves multivitamins are bad for you, I will continue to take one each day. What could possibly go wrong?

I’ve been thinking Americans will turn to homeopathic remedies , like vitamins and herbs, as ObamaCare shuts down Americans access to doctors. I also been thinking that the medical establishment will fight back against alternative treatments to the point they will try to make vitamins and other over-the-counter remedies illegal.

This story confirms what I have been thinking.

So which Big Pharma companies funded this study?

A healthy public does not need medical attention or medicine. I take vitamins regularily...I do not take any prescription drugs. Even for my slipped disc, the doctor recommended over the counter Naproxen Sodium instead of a narcotic (which worked)

The only way one could get a truly nutritious diet is if they had lots of money and no job

These anti vitamin articles concern me because they are dealing with one a day multivitamins.

But I think certain supplements especially vitamin D, can be absolutely essential. I believe D has proven health benefits for bone density and cancer prevention.

And likewise to you: God bless your cosmic spiritual understandings. It’s good to have spiritual beliefs, even if they may just be comforting fluff.

All of these were observational studies, not clinical studies. They can’t be used to made a definitive clinical recommendation.

Big Pharma sells a lot of supplements. Who do you think makes Centrum, etc.?

Agreed. There are, for example, several different compounds used for calcium. Some are more readily available than others. There are optimal ratios of different vitamins as some tend to work together, like Vitamin K2, D, and A.

Then there’s how they are manufactured. Different processes result in better quality absortion. There’s a great deal of other variables as well, such as one’s own genetic makeup. Probably too many, as you said, to find the funding to to it right.

Big Pharma can sell a government subsidized prescription pill to you and get 100 buck profit vs. 1.50 profit for a bottle of centrum....

From personal experience I know that this doctor doesn’t know what he is talking about. I exercise regular and extensively by means of aerobics as well as lifting weights on a daily basis and my body looks and can confirms what I am saying and by now I am heading towards eighty.

Some time ago the corners of my mouth started to crack what was rather painful and it just so happened I went to my physician for a flu shot and at the same time I questioned him about the cracked corners of my mouth. He prescribed an ointment by the name of Nizoral as he thought that it was yeast which all of us have to a certain extent in our saliva what kept it from healing but never addressed the cause.

Well it did very little to say the least. After this I done my own research and found that heavy exercise along with consumption of alcohol (I like my Martini’s) can cause this problem. I have been taking vitamins all along but it was suggested that in this case I should increase my intake of vitamin B-2 Riboflavin, because heavy exercise as well as consumption of alcohol will deplete B-2 very rapidly.

I took a quarter TSP of B-2 for three days and the cracked corners of my mouth were gone. As we get older our stomachs absorb less and less of what the human body needs, and if we eat in order to get all the nutrients we would need we would look like a blimp and this is where most of the auxiliary vitamins come in which we can not get from the food we eat.

When it comes to the statement the doctor made about Vitamins, even so he may be smart in others things, I believe he should apply for a refund on his studies as there always has been and will be a place for vitamins, even so the pharmaceutical can not make much money on it. Turmeric, even so it is not a vitamin so to speak of is a good example, with so many benefits it would take more than a page.

Also the fact that every person has different vitamin needs.
