The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
BTW, squirrels are daylight creatures. You won't catch them at night.

“lo and behold Im getting a pepper growing and some buds but no root shoots. Go figure..”
That is extraordinary. I will grow banana peppers next spring, will put the seeds under a grow lamp inside for 8 weeks. I couldn’t believe all the pepper plant instructions for seed was to start them inside 8 to 10 weeks before planting outside.
Well, for me it would be catch them at night as my day doesn’t start until 9 am and the squirrels start their crap early in the morning. So, I still say I will catch one at night if I manage to catch one. My day ends about 1 am and start about 9 am. Anything in between those two times is night.
HI ALL!
I planted my walking onions in a pot and am eager to see what becomes of them next spring.
My acorn squash continues to bloom and develop proto squashes, but they all shrivel up and drop. That’s what I’ve seen with all my squashes. I’m just gonna let it do it’s thing and if it surprises me, well fine. If not, then that’s ok too. I’ll tackle it next round.
That is interesting about the vetch helping with the cuke attack fungus. Am wondering if that might be my problem this time with the acorn. *sigh*
Did final harvests of okras and cukes. Alas, our fridge died, and we put dry ice in the broken one while we shopped for a new unit. The contents of the hydrator drawer all froze up.
I have some bean pods still unharvested. I was going to wait to get them when it appears they have dried up.
I’m actually very happy about my gardening process this past season. I LEARNED so much, and actually had a few nice harvests. I’m ready to take a break from it right now. I do have some things to do to prep the small plot and my pots.
Speaking of pots, our Lowe’s had some 13” pots on sale for $1.50 each, so I picked up 6 of those suckers!
What kind of bug looks like dark grey or black aphids? They infsted the collard greens, I killed them but greens stopped growing(bugs or cold weather?)
Bueller? Anyone?
Good deal on the pots. We’ll be working on putting up persimmons and nuts for a while, as well as planting the wheat. Then we get a break. That’s when I try to buy large amounts of meats on sale and can them for the pantry. Good for eating out of the can or quick meals.
Even quicker using a thermos.LOL
It won’t be long till dreams of garden plans and visions of produce dance in my little head-then out comes the diagrams of the plots and past year’s plantings.LOL
I am not familiar with anything along those lines. Have you checked the Extension office for your area? Does anyone else have any ideas?
I have been wondering about collard greens, because they are a good source of calcium.
What do they taste like?
They’re nummy.
Cook up some chopped bacon, onion with hints of garlic, red wine vinegar and red pepper flakes. Throw into the crock pot with chopped greens(ribs removed) and a little concentrated chicken stock(very littl liquid in crock pot for richer flavor) Sometimes I add a tiny bit of beer or white wine.
Some recipes call for a little sugar or honey, but my family prefers them unsweetened.
Sounds pretty good.
LOL... Do you know how to tie a Hang Mans knot?
Barack Obama?
Mealy Bugs?
We cut them up, add smoked pork hock or sliced pork shank, add onions and some garlic maybe, cooked in chicken broth till very tender. Have pepper sauce at the table and homemade cornbread with butter, not imitation and invite us over. The key is to buy small tender leaves no bigger than a saucer to begin with, after some frost on them is even better.
Collards have lots of iron, too, so if you have thick blood, you want to go easy on collards.
Oh man - now you’ve done it. That all sounds so good. Then you had to go and mention cornbread. Now I’m a gonna have ta make some corn bread.LOL
Probably got lots of vitamin k too - most greens do. Dad couldn’t eat many greens, because it interfered with the thinning effect of warfarin.
Thank you so much, my dear Marcella!
Yea, not good for people on thinners.
We had collards last week and homemade peppers sauce at the table with buttered cornbread and some of my ground ghost pepper.
I gave some ghost peppers to my mechanic. I told him not to eat all at once unless he was suicidal. LOL He says he likes em hot; we shall see!m,
Sweetie, you are not strange! You educate us! Thank you for all that you do! (((Hugs)))
I wish you success to the nth degree!
