Where's the weekly thread? Anyone have more members of the list?
How does one know when to repot ginger? I have 3 in a flowe pot. When do I replant them to a larger pot? When do I know when to remove them for kitchen use?
Lovely.
Feral hogs are tasty. Our foreman used to catch them. OH my what a day they would have. Relatives from far and near would come for the hog killing, fat rendering, roasting underground, or just butchered and doing what they do. Every one would go home with some. We even got some and took it to
a friend who made the best feral hog sausage. OH YUM.

Thanks for the pics. They are beautiful. Will your wife be making pickles? What kind do ya’ll like best?
That’s bad news for the ranchers, and people who like beef. When I lived in S. Dakota the first snow was in October-a blizzard, so I was a little confused by the term-early snowfall.
Last year we had ranchers slaughtering their cattle because of the drought. Now this. Ranchers have a tough row to hoe.
I don’t know that there’s a “time” as I’ve asked that before. This is my first try at ginger and they’re up to 2 feet tall. A couple are starting to show the root above the soil. I had cut a root from the grocery store up and put it in a hanging basket (yes, I know, but I used what was handy) earlier in the summer and thought when I brought it in for the winter I’d put it in a deeper pot in case it needed staking. I don’t know when to dig it to use.
Blah, cat just walked across the keyboard and messed it all up. Now to try to fix it.....
Bread and Butter Pickles are my favorite hands down. BTW... I got over half of my 150 sq ft my Garlic patch spaded yesterday. I can only spade for 10 minutes and then I have to rest for 10 minutes due to the pain in my legs. The weather continues to be above average and we may have set a new high temperature on Sunday and weed seeds are sprouting everywhere. (uggg)
I just solved the case of the freaking squirrels and birds. In 5 days I wont have to worry about them. We decided those container plants grouped together in the dirt garden, had to have permanent net over them and it had to be tall to accommodate tomatoes AND the two tall sesame plants. There will always be tall growing plants of something out there.
After much research of expensive down to less money, looking for the right product, I spent $24 dollars and solved this problem. I had an extra outdoor large umbrella and a 50 lb. metal stand for it that isnt going to move even in a hurricane. We cut the material off the umbrella and that left us with the aluminum frame. Then, I ordered a 9 ft. umbrella screen. It has a zipper door and the bottom has a flexible ring around it one fills that with water to make it heavy so it wont move. I place that over the aluminum frame, fill the bottom tube with water and I have a screened tall area for all those plants. I unzip the door and walk in and deal with the plants. Rain water will seep out from under the ring and the ring isnt tall.
Ill have to think up something to get netting over the walking onions so the netting is high enough not to interfere with the height of the onions. That is a minor problem I should be able to solve easily.
We worked on the deck and garden area for two days. One would think that small an area wouldnt take a lot of work well, that is wrong. Now that there is some kind of order, the upkeep will be much easier.
Five days and I kick squirrel/bird butt.
The umbrella thing sounds good. I always approve of expedient field engineering. ;)

“All of my baby cabbage plants were gone this morning.”
You tell me you keep the squirrels cleared out, so what could eat those plants? Possums? Have you ever seen any there? Raccoons? Have you ever seen any there?

LOL. What a good solution. Such great news about the fast progress now that you have a helper.
I like Bread and Butter and Sweet. Hubby likes dill. My main thing is the crunch. As long as they have the crunce and a bit of sweet, I am happy. So I love the taste of Bread and Butter, and the crunch of sweet gherkins.
I am now up to 15 minutes on my feet before the pain starts. Doc says the excercises will help the vagus nerve situation, and so far it appears to be helping slowly.
I saw that thread. Hope you’re doing OK. It’s remarkable considering that we had temps in the high 80’s today in central Texas. Still dry as a bone though.
Turns out that one large (6-8" diameter) main branch on a box elder broke. It was a 3' long horizontal, twisting split all the way through, rather than a snapping in half; so far, that is the only badly damaged tree I've found so far.
My toy choi keeps disappearing, a few at a time. I thought it must be birds because I don't think it's insects, unless they are immune to sevin, and sluggo, and deadline.
My toy choi in the house, under the grow light is doing great. I hope to let it get big enough to not disapperar once it goes into the garden.
good deal....congratulations...
I know you are glad to have Wayne home and be doing things together.
Was he surprised to see Mom outside growing veggies? I bet he was, but by now, he probably expects the unexpected when he comes home. Did he have any surprises for you, too?
