Were you born to be obese?

"From previous studies, it is estimated that 40% to 70% of a person's BMI is inherited," Batterham says, but it's complex and not as simple as just giving a percent.

Overall, the role of any single gene [in obesity] is not big, Qi says. However, if all the obesity-related genes are considered, “the effect would be sizable."

Skinny people die just as dead.
The notion that we all live for ever playing volleyball on the beach is ridiculous.

My doctor. She was recommended to me by my hand doctor a couple years ago.

She's a hottie.And she knows what she's doing.

The Gov food pyramid is so crazy.

Shovel down that cereal covered with sugar as part of a HEALTHY BREAKFAST.

A couple of eggs will KILL ya.

They tell us for 50 years to be corn fed and wonder why people are obese?

Sure.

The same way people are born losers...

You decide each moment at a time and tell yourself stories that condition you to your current state.

I respectfully disagree.

I have 8 brothers and sisters. I am the baby. All of my siblings were athletic and very thin as kids and for some into their early twenties. As was I. The people in my family who eat well and exercise (myself, my two marathon running brothers, my sister who has MS) are all not only thin but look 20 years younger than our age with fabulous bodies and skin to march. The rest are obese, gray, and just plain old and look their age and older.

The only difference is our lifestyles. Period.

By the way. I am small framed and 5'6. One of my sisters that is monstrously obese is also small framed and 5'6. If you put us two together I look like a 20 year old super model and she looks like something out of joba the hut.

I love her but girlfriend just kept eating crappy foods and not exercising.

All those siblings will die way before their time.

While you have a point it does not explain it all.
My family is very athletic, marathoners and all that.

Pop died young from a heart attack.
His Identical twin, also a marathoner lived 15 years longer and died of respiratory problems.
They had virtually identical genes and lead the same lifestyle.

I smoke and drink, I might drop tomorrow or at 90.
Who knows?

Thanks for your post. Yes. I am one of those people. I am 47 and a fit size 0. I eat less than 1400 calories a day and do cardio 5-6 days a week and resistance training 2-3 days a week. I do allow for more calories than 1400 2 days a week (which actually keeps my metabolism functioning higher and burning weight. When I do cardio, it is usually around 65-75 minutes. I love it. I feel great. I eat wholesome and pure (protein, fruits, veggies, seaweed.), drinking lots of water, teas and green tea. I feel and look great but I work at it and have to stay on it. The biggest change though is the eating. I can go without exercise (if I wanted I love exercising though) and not gain if I eat right.

I also count my calories 5 days a week. It is sort of like balancing a check book. If one doesn't keep track they don't know how much they have. Well people work hard to lose weight why not find out the nuts and bolts of how many calories they really need to lose, maintain, or gain weight. People just guess. But okay if one just lives on great proteins, veggies, and fruits sparingly as well as a few wholesome grains on occasion.

I feel free. I just live wholesomely and enjoy life and feeling excellent.

Some people confuse Genetics with Destiny.

You may be pre-disposed to be an alcoholic. Doesn’t mean you are born one, just mean that when it comes to alcohol, you could become a habitual drunk faster and easier than the average man on the street. People seem to understand this.

Then there are genes that make one pre-disposed to be obese. Doesn’t mean you will be; just means that you may not get the thrill from exercise that others get. Some people run and feel fantastic; others run and feel wasted, exhausted and are essentially done for the day. No thrill, no “rush”, no endorphins - just tired. Remove the positive rewards and no matter what shape you are in, you won’t want to continue to do the exercise, will you?

I have had to work to stay reasonably fit, my entire life. I get no thrill from a hike, a bike trip, a run. I can run 3 miles and NEVER feel the endorphin rush - ever. I feel tired, I’m done. I do it because I feel I need to; not because I want to. Never get any enjoyment out of it - it’s a chore, but it keeps me from weighing 500lbs.

My grandparents were heavy, my mother has been fighting her weight since she was a child; and so have I. I have never been a track star. Even at 5’11” with a 6-pack and weighing 168 at 32; exercise was a chore. At 52 it’s still a chore.

I have the propensity to be very obese, all I would have to do to be morbidly obese is continue to eat 1500-1800 calories a day and stop exercising. It shouldn’t be that way - but I assure you it is. If I got the “rush” others got from exercise, it sure would be easier to get up and hit the treadmill or the gym every morning.

Well yes. There is also stress response that certainly ages. It is just that I have had massive stress in my life more so than many of my siblings and I sought out support and assistance. I think this may have an impact on why I am so healthy too. I gather around me—God, emotional support, take care of myself, stay engaged in life learning new things, taking risks, challenging myself. But this too goes back to how healthy and energetic I feel as a result of self care. So who knows. It is interesting area to explore. Sorry about your Father. I also lost mine to a heart attack Great you come from an athletic family. :)

There are two things I can see.
Pop was a type A personality and he was also the original cookie monster, but that was OK because that is “Carb loading”

Who really knows?

Eat, Drink, be Happy.

Have you tried listening to music when you workout? What a drag to not get the high. Have you tried running outside? What sort of food do you enjoy. Do you know your blood type? If so you may want to read up on Eat right for your Type. They list everything from style of exercise that is fitting to food. I thought it bunk intially but have found a lot of it true about me. That is fantastic that you keep at it. Enjoyment or no enjoyment that is what it takes. Kudos to you!!

To get an accurate picture of genetics involving weight in your family go back to pictures of family members in The Great Depression and WW2 up through the current generation. That will give you a more realistic genetic measure to go on. Many times in families there are those who are skinny and can eat anything they wish. There are others that if they look at food they gain weight. Both can even have the same level of daily activity and eat the same basic foods.

BTW who was that exercise/fitness guy who was on TV into nearly his 80's and his brother that out lived him? And there's some other guy on TV all the time pushing his weight loss exercise & diet program with and wears shorts. LOL Seriously he doesn't look healthy or happy.

My aunts and uncles lived into their late 70's and 80's both the skinny and the heavy.

I wish they would quit using BMI to determine obesity. It completely ignores muscle mass. My BMI of 30 gets me classified as obese. Not “overweight” but obese. My workout today was 150 burpees, which I knocked out in 21 minutes. Not bad for an obese guy :)
