f | June 14, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 06/14/2013 12:44:34 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I planted some brandywine tomatoes last year, but they were at the back forty, so when we decided to let the garden burn up rather than drain the well, there went the brandywines.

Hubby got happy with his lawn mower AGAIN. Mowed down my okra. Same exact place where he mowed down my beets last year.

Sounds passive-aggressive. He knows perfectly well where the garden is. Good luck.

“Your jalapeno flowers will be white. Not all your squash flowers will produce a squash.

Well, that little flower is yellow so I don’t know what that is unless it’s a sweet pepper.

“Only the female flowers will. Look for a small bulb just below the flower. The flower on the right in the photo below is the female.”

Just went out to look at the two huge squash plants. Both of them are homosexuals. Do I sue the company?

I forgot to mention. If you ever decide to grow melons they have a similar flower structure (Male, Female) as in the picture of the squash flower.

Your plant will eventually produce Female flowers. Seems that the male flowers always arrive first.

I have seed for small melons to grow next spring. If they are all homosexuals, I’m definitely suing.

“You could plant them now. They’re perennial (come back year after year). As long as they’ve got a ‘good start’ before first freeze you’re golden.”

“You’d need to get them a bed started before then though.”

Now, don’t freak out - I’m going to plant them in Grow Bags. They will have the nicest potting soil mix with plenty of room with no nasty bugs to bother them. And, if there is a hard freeze, I just pick up the bags, sit them on the deck under the roof and cover them.

I think Asparagus will grow even into zone 4 or 5, someone correct me?

As it is, in Houston or the general area it might not actually be cold enough for it in the winter. It might prefer to be left out in the freeze.

?

I am zone 8 and it’s hot, hot, hot. I’m sure it won’t get too cold for them. This past winter was very mild. Some years I remember 5 degrees for almost a week but that is very unusual. We usually have two “cold snaps”, being down in the 20s at night for a few nights, then it’s back up.

However, with global warming (cough) I don’t know what will happen. :o)

LOL. A few smart alec remarks come to mind regarding the all male flowers, but I have decided that discretion is better, so I’ll just say that the female flowers will be along shortly in all probability.

Keep your powder dry - suing might be premature.

Today WAS beautiful. However, this has been the worst time in gardening history for me. Nothing but rain and solidly clay soil. I have had nothing but oatmeal or playdough since the end of winter. Many of my plantings that should have been in by May 15 are going in this weekend come hell or high water. All hope and plans are off.

Still, I’m alive. God loves me. My family is well. The chickens are doing well and slated for slaughter next weekend.

Even so, nothing but magnificent tomatoes last year and miserable dwarves this year . . .

I weep.

I do have apples coming, though.

I used blackstrap molasses and epsom salt this year along with compost tea. I also used only rainwater..

Ditto--also I took /johnny's advice and added some seaweed liquid and a little homemade fish emulsion adding all to brew in the sun as the compost tea. Its a little stinky but the plants seem to love it except the chives. They no likey and go bye bye. I'm almost tempted to drink the stuff myself, eehheheheh. Just kidding.

With tomatoes, I have even used cuttings to start new hybrid plants, but this year I’m just doing heirlooms.

So whats your method of taking tomato cuttings? I'd like to learn that too.

PS. Thanks for hosting The Garden Thread. Its great!

DO NOT plant them in grow bags. Asparagus needs deep roots. Deep, deep roots. They need a dedicated asparagus bed that has been prepared for them.

Promise. Cross my heart and die.

I grow asparagus (and it volunteers) here near DFW. It grows like a weed.

So Marcella are you a plant bigot or just a squashophobe? Beware they might thoroughly enjoy the compost tea baggin' regimens.

Prayers up.

For 2 years, during the summer, my back yard looked like it had been nuked. Seems when we get some relief, someone else gets feathers.
