RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — As Father’s Day approaches, children are reminded to appreciate their dads and the impact on their lives.
Today dads around the city were honored a week in advance of Father’s Day. Celebrate Fatherhood 2013 was held this afternoon at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center. While these dads and their children enjoyed the moon bounce and competed in contests, an alarming amount of children in the area won’t have fathers around to celebrate the holiday.
First Things First, an organization dedicated to keeping dads involved in kids’ lives, reports that 60 percent of all families in the city of Richmond are single-parent households. Within the African-American demographic, that number spikes up to 86 percent, a number that surpasses the national average.

That's usually how things go with us humans: first too far one way, then too far the other.
I miss the good ol' days of personal responsibility and morality. We are what we have always been; I wonder what made us rethink our promiscuity and if it feels good do it, a lot, mentality to adopt that former belief system.
Were we just better humans then? More in tune with out soul and connection to our Creator? Or was it fear? Of incurable diseases and consequences? Or just good old fashioned shame?
Maybe we just learned from cause and effect and watching the suffering of others and sought to avoid it for ourselves.
Now we reward them for it and the harm they/we do to us.

Your population statistics may not match the statistics for numbers of families with kids(with or without fathers).
Assuming 50.4 percent of all families with kids in Richmond are black and 86 per cent of these black families have no fathers...then these black families represent 43.34 per cent of all families in Richmond that have no fathers in them. Since fatherlessness over all in Richmond is 60 per cent then the other 16.66 per cent is split between the 39.8 per cent of families with kids that were white and the other 9.8 per cent of other nationalities of families who have kids. If you add the whites and non black minorities together you have 49.6 and multiplying 16.66 per cent you get, out of the total number of non black minorities and white families who have kids in Richmond, 8.26 per cent who are fatherless.
So of the total populations of families in Richmond with kids ...43.34 percent are black and fatherless and 8.43 percent of the total amount are white/non black minority families who are fatherless. Giving an overall rate of 60 percent total fatherlessness of all the families in Richmond. (with a rate of 86 per cent amongst black families....that is using the numbers you provided.) I suspect though that using total population figures isn’t valid)
