There are probably many people in history who have received more credit than they deserved. Excluding any US Presidents in the past century (that would be too easy), what three historic figures do you think are the most overrated?
Marx
Freud
...
and a three-way tie between Mohammed, Darwin, and Justin Bieber! :)
Any general who overwhelms a much weaker enemy by vast resources in men or material or both should never be held up as a great leader.
Examples: Crazy Horse at Little Big Horn.
Grant: Against Robert E. Lee.
Xerxes and Darius against the ancient Greeks and not just the Spartans.
My picks would be: MLK, Nelson Mandela, and Gorbachev. I wouldn't even put Hillary in this group as she's not a historical figure and I don't think she'll ever be elected POTUS.
Hillary Clinton
Martin Luther King Jr.
ANY democrat that sat on the Supreme Court
As the Angels have quickly found out...Josh Hamilton.
Heh, I was reading through the posts thinking “Didn’t they read the premise?”
I think it was simply too much to resist. Heck, my fingers were twitching to type Foxtrot Delta Romeo.
But I held off...:)
I agree about Ghandi. Most overrated. He had the good fortune to go up against the British. Anyone else would have waxed him.
General Douglas MacArthur.
Darwin. My husband got into a debate with a law professor after DH pointed out that Darwin was a racist. Proff asked DH to prove it and DH gave him several quotes, proff ended up with egg on his face.
I was waiting for that one to show up.
General Haig
He threw away hundreds of thousands of lives to no purpose, and got away with it only after Pershing brought over two million american boys to win the war.
+1 but I’m a Holly fan
In no particular order....
Tom Cruise
Rob Reiner
John Travolta
Pee Wee Herman
Jane Fonda
Cindy Sheehan
I read your first line of that post, and thought I would offer up Chester Nimitz as a rebuttal, but kept in mind he was locked in a death grip with the Japanese Navy when they were still on par or even superior.
So he wouldn’t have applied.
So many mentioned are pop culture rather than historical figures. SMH

Don’t let yerself get caught on the Chalmette battlefield after sundown.
Whether you like him or not, McArthur was one of the most brilliant generals of all time. His invasion of Inchon was a true masterpiece.
His WWII leadership was also of the highest order.
I will say, though, that even though my opinion of him in certain respects is not that high, I still recognize that he did do some pretty good things.
I would have had Nimitz taking the surrender from the Japanese rather than MacArthur.
Senator Barack Hussein Obama
Governor William Jefferson Clinton
Dr. Zoo, Doctor of Phenomonology
