The 12-year-old who can spell better than spelling bee judges! Little girl eliminated after judges couldn't get 'braille' right
W-R-O-N-G
A young girl with an affinity for spelling was erroneously eliminated from a spelling bee in Selma, California after she allegedly misspelled the word 'braille.'
According to KMPH, Sierra Shoemaker, 12, provided the correct spelling for the word, but the judges had the word spelled with one 'L' and sent her packing with a second-place finish

'I didn't really want to say anything because when the word master tells you [that you] spelled a word wrong you don't really want to argue with him.'
Despite a community outcry, officials from Selma's school district would not grant an appeal on the spelling bee, but they did provide something even better.
Shoemaker will be able to compete in next week's Fresno County Spelling Bee.

I suppose the judges had been focusing on Marxist, militant-feminist 'literature' in college instead of learning correct spelling, although I recall knowing how to spell Braille as a VERY young stoat....

As I hope people know, the infamous Dan Quayle incident consisted of the school handing Quayle a card upon which "potato" had been mispelled. The student in the bee spelled it correctly, Quayle looked at the official card and said, "I'm sorry, that's wrong."
And the media decided that Quayle was an idiot.

It actually wasn’t spelled wrong. You can spell the plural two ways, one is more commonly used today than the other; but in the past, the version he used was the more common way.

The word was not plural, it was singular, and the TEACHER spelled it wrong.

    It actually wasnt spelled wrong.

Since it is named after a proper name (Luis Braille), I am surprised that an alternate spelling has become acceptable.

Potato and potatoe are both correct. Potato is the currently preferred version, but the flash card at the Dan Quayle event used the other spelling as the standard.

To: UnwashedPeasant
Potatoe is not correct because we no longer live in the 1300s when standard spelling didn’t exist. Potato is the correct spelling, and the way you would want teachers to teach your kids to spell it.

    Shocked, I am Shocked!!
I must admit I was surprised when I found the young lady was ‘blond and blue eyed’, I was surely looking for a ‘disadvantaged’ student.
Glad to see the judges had the good sense to allow the young lady to be added to the next step.

When I was 12 I would have kept quiet too. Not now. I would have said “No, you’re wrong. The correct spelling is what I said. Go back and get the correct information.”

And to think that today we have a president who while may be able to spell does not know how many states there are in the Union. :-))

Go take a look at the ubiquitous Betty Crocker Cookbook. They spell it with an “e”.
