You make composing toilets and we will buy them, at least I would if you don't charge a million dollars for one.

I read through that do it yourself list and there are some good things on there. I have a fire resistant really heavy box thingy that I have important papers in and that goes with me if I have to leave the house but I copied the list on the do it yourself page to check that with what's in my box.

The candle heater is an idea for another way to stay warm. I'd buy the one they link to rather than try to do that myself.

I have bags of laundry lint to start a fire but adding wax to a glob of it is a good idea to make it burn longer so you get a good fire going.

I have two bar fire starters - the kind you strike and mega sparks come off to start the lint burning. I just have a lot of backups to start a fire and sealed metal cans of zillions of strike anywhere matches is one of them. Unless a tornado totally destroys this house and everything in it, I can start a fire. A tornado won't destroy me as I am indestructible - that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

“I got my flu shot yesterday. Am to old to take a chance now days.”

Good for you. I'm likely older than you are and I can't take the shot. Became very ill and my arm swelled and was hot and I had fever from that and chills and was told it would be worse next time and not to take it. The same thing happened with a tetanus shot and can't have that again, either. Am very allergic to iodine and can't get near that stuff - no heavy iodine laced seafood and no IVP dye for medical tests.

I just have to stay home at my age when flu is rampant as it is now.

I'm staying at home for the duration, too. Without the spleen, I'm very vulnerable to catching anything, and this flu sounds nasty.

I can stay here on the property for a few months at my normal comfort level without having to visit a store.

“LOL, but one thing about prepping is that suddenly those messy old yards and garages and metal sheds, look much more useful.”

I have that problem with my three family relatives who come here to visit. They don't want any clutter at all in my house. If they see two big packages of paper towels, they frown or two big packages of toilet paper - they only want to see one - more than that is “clutter”. Extra food is ridiculous to them. These three family members don't have squat if an emergency happens.

They used to comment on the “extra” I had, now they just roll their eyes and say nothing. You know what? They could stay home, couldn't they so they didn't have to see emergency preps. I don't have any preps in the middle of a floor, so I think I'm doing great. Can I get an “Amen!” from the crowd?

Just so you know, a review of the last 50 years of flu shot effectiveness data shows that you’re only 4% less likely to get the flu with a vaccine than without. It’s hardly worth it.

I’m almost finished rotating several brands of older (2005-10) heat & eat soups out of stock, and none have gone bad. Ditto w/ cans of vegetables, fruits, stocks etc. As long as they weren’t dented, rusted and kept dry and cool, they weathered the past 2-8yrs years, just fine. FWIW...

AMEN! Sister.

Most of my preps are pretty invisible. Some are in a cedar chest in the parlor. Some under the baby grand. Some in a closet. Lots of cabinets here for a tiny little shotgun shack.

No-one in my family says a word about it, except to let me know when they find something on sale that I might want.

We've always bought in bulk to save $$s. "Grab me a bag of flour at the store means" a 50 lb bag of bread flour. I dislike tuna in water, and prefer tuna in oil. When the kid finds some on sale, she gets it for me.

“I'm staying at home for the duration, too. Without the spleen, I'm very vulnerable to catching anything, and this flu sounds nasty.”

I hadn't thought of you and the flu and the minus spleen. Yes, you are compromised so don't go to a store. If anyone comes to see you, have them wash their hands as soon as they come in or have them bring hand sanitizer to use before they walk in. Do you have any surgical masks? If you do, make them wear them in your house. That will catch their spittle so it doesn't get on you. If you have no masks, keep them across the room from you and no huggy/kissy thing with them. They could have the beginning of flu and not know they have it but they would be shedding the virus.

I guess you and I can converse with each other during this time so we won't feel like the Long Ranger. You must not get the flu and I mean it so do what you must to totally avoid the possibility. Am I going to have to drive up there and lock you in?

By the way, on that do it yourself page, you can click on a link and watch a man unlock two kinds of locks with a piece of aluminum cut out of a coke can. That was exceptional to me but maybe guys already knew how to defeat two types of locks.

Kart, thanks for that do it yourself page.

You got it! Although the big Sears catalogs were an essential tool, but are now scarce, a nice New York phone book should work nicely. Or hell, the Obamacare document. Won’t walk around with a yellow butt.

That is fine for those 4% that are less likely but I am over 65 now and not the youngster I once was. It is worth it to me and my wife at my age. I very rarely get colds or really sick but can’t risk it!

If you have the space, and it works, I’d go for it! That is an amazing deal and you can obtain it and then do the research later! Just my humble opinion... Please, if you do get it, and start experimenting, let us know how it works for you!

An acquaintance died of flu shot complications last week. She was 50 years old, healthy and a mother. Sad sad deal. My days of taking the flu shot are over. I will use other methods for prevention.

I don’t think you get what I mean.

The flu shot only decreases a person’s chance of getting the flu by 4%. That’s what a study looking at 50 years worth of data on the effectiveness of the flu vaccine discovered.

If you don’t get a shot there’s a certain chance you’ll get the flu or you won’t. If you get the shot, that only decreases your chances of getting the flu ONLY 4%. That hardly changes anything.

Ruger Carbine semi-automatic 22 LR:

The Remington rifle I have is too heavy for me. A few weeks ago, I started trying to find that carbine listed above and have tried every day going to every gun seller on the web and there are absolutely none. Also, there are no hollow point bullets left for a 22. Trust me, I have searched everywhere.

Ruger made what they call a “Dealer Exclusive” and it's a pink 22 rifle just like the carbine except a bit shorter. I thought maybe no one was buying a pink rifle but there are none of them.

What I found is there is no semiautomatic rifle in any caliber, none, and there are no hollow point bullets for any of those guns. The only rifle one can find is a bolt action or break barrel as both of those take only one bullet at a time - no one is buying those.

And, there are no multi-bullet magazines. I found one 25 bullet magazine made for the Ruger 22 several days ago and bought that and it's not Ruger made but customer comments says it works fine.

In this modern age, this country has never been stripped of guns, ammo, magazines like right now. There should be jobs available in these factories as they are surely on 24 hr. work schedules to get more guns/other stuff, to the stores.

People think Hussein is going to do a number on our guns and accessories and they will disappear. A pox on Hussein and his crazy VP who would be president if Hussein died - both of these men, in my opinion, are agents of the devil.

Boy that’s the truth. I try to stay in all winter. Hubby brings home fresh milk, if he happens to have to go out to work or something.

I used to get every little sniffle that was out there. Then I started taking Vitamin D, and staying at home as much as possible. I still get exposed, because my granddaughter brings home the germs, and I babysit with her when she’s sick.

Still, I haven’t had a real bout with the flu or a cold since I started taking the supplement.

Unfortunately, I had to go to the lab at the hospital for blood work, so I am hoping that I won’t get it. I came home and scrubbed my hands, face etc. and changed clothes. Unfortuantely, I couldn’t find my hand sanitizer that is usually in my purse. So I just kept repeating all the way home: don’t touch your face, don’t touch your face.....

“Although the big Sears catalogs were an essential tool, but are now scarce...”

That is what my grandparents used in Arkansas - outhouse with Sears catalog.

One of my family members who doesn't like clutter in my house, opened the door to the cabinet under a bathroom sink and saw big phone books stacked there. He immediately suggested we should throw those away. I looked at him and said, “Toilet paper”. He shut the door to the cabinet. He thinks I'm nuts because I prep - but who has something for toilet paper if regular toilet paper runs out? I do and he doesn't.

“An acquaintance died of flu shot complications last week.”

I'm sorry that happened and she had many years left to live for her family. I think that is what doctors think would happen to me since my reaction was so bad years ago when that happened. I am afraid that would be the outcome and I can stay home since my working days in the public are over.

I'm sure the number of people dying from having the shot is very low but if you happened to be one of them, you are dead.
