If they prepped more and talked less, maybe nobody would notice them — and, isn’t that the idea?

I have a hunch that the best preppers are the ones no one knows about when the SHTF.

What makes individual Americans who prepare for disaster so much worse than our president & congresspeople, who will enjoy top drawer accomodations should the SHTF?

At least they prep with their own money.

Obviously, Preppers are hated because they are not relying on the Government for anything

Even GOP Liberals hate the Preppers....although have no problem taking ads from Prepper food and supply companies.

Remember the quote “there’s no way to rule innocent men...”?
Goes for self-sufficient men too. Can’t manipulate someone you can’t get leverage on.

My guess is that we scare them because we don’t need Government to ‘save’ us - from what is usually Government-induced disasters in the FIRST place!

Prep on! :)

Because we're REAL boy scouts and not those ecology badge wooses

We can friggin' tie knots, start fires, patch the wounded, house the shelterless, warm the cold and eat pretty good too.

My husband’s brother lives in Wichita, Kansas and when he built his home he had a bomb shelter installed that could be accessed from the basement but that also had an outside exit. His neighbors laughed at him for having a bomb shelter. When the tornado swept through the neighborhood this past April Evan and his family came through it just fine in the shelter. They also had a ready-made place to live while they repaired the damage to their house.

Some of their snarky neighbors aren’t around anymore to hear them say, “I told you so.”

Ditto with the preppers. Maybe they’re wrong and nothing will happen. So then what’s the harm? To me they are no different than people who buy fire extinguishers: you buy it because you might have a fire, not because you’re crazy and paranoid.

Remember how many it takes to keep a secret, folks: One.

I downplay prepping, 'just have a little extra'...

I'm just as concerned about some of the parasitic family members as the zombie hordes. What they don't know won't hurt me.

The author’s thesis is that preppers are hated because they make non-preppers question their assumptions about their faith in the system, which makes them uncomfortable. I think that’s true, but I also think that’s incomplete.

Prepper’s are also hated because prepping is an outward sign of self-sufficiency, i.e., an expression of a person’s willingness to give up his stake in the system. The prepper says, “I am prepared for the worst, and as a result, while I don’t wish misfortune on you, I don’t much care whether your system fails.” That scares the bejeezus out of the typical liberal - the noting that strong-willed, independent, productive people are willing to unplug themselves from their system. Prepping is a essentially an expression of the willingness to “go Galt”, and those who depend on others for their existance find that prosepect terrifying.

If you have been following our preppers’ threads you will find examples of the three types of people that I often warn fellow preppers about, two of the types are the “I’ve got lots of guns and plenty of ammo and I’ll just take what I need.” and the “I don’t prep because I don’t believe anything is going to happen, but if it does preppers should share with me.”

Call many of these people on their post and many will backdown or just not respond in their embarrassment, but many will reply back in righteous anger the same anger that you get from most Libs who are shocked and infuriated by preppers not putting sharing to the forefront. Even though many of us do, just we don’t to the point of endangering our own families.

Now as I said some the “I’ll take what I want crowd” when confronted will often back off saying things like “I was just joking”, but I don’t believe it. When I read their post I can’t help but think of this quote from one of my favorite westerns ’Open Range’: “Most times a man will tell you his bad intentions if you listen, let yourself hear.” I’ve ‘heard’ their intentions and they aren’t good.

The third type that I warn about are those who wish to bring God’s Armageddon into the discussion as if they know that it will be God’s will should some catastrophe befall us. They claim this despite the fact that the history of man is full of direr times which were caused by nature or man himself. History has shown us all too well that men do not need God to help them muck things up to a point were their fellows cry out for God to end it all and relieve them of their misery. Some of these I like to ask: “Do you wear a seatbelt when you drive or ride in a car? Do you have car insurance?” And if they reply yes then I tell them their faith must not be as strong as they claim.

The real problem with the ‘its God’s will’ crowd who will be that many will want to see you punished as they will see your prepping as you trying to dodging God’s punishment. This group along with the “I don’t prep, but you should share” group will be among the first to report you and your ‘hoarding’ to the powers that be in their efforts to make sure you too suffer just as they do. The first group because as I said they see you as trying to escape the rightful wrath of God (as if they know the Lord’s mind) and the second because you proved them wrong.

You can be fairly certain that all three groups will hate you as they will be quick to blame you for the ‘troubles’ because in their twisted way of thinking your prepping brought the ‘troubles’ and therefore you need to be punished for your transgressions.

To these three types I like to add a fourth the have hearted anti-prepper the ones that say well prepping for a couple weeks is OK, but anything beyond that is NUTS. Well if you were a couple of weeks prepper and lived in Sandy’s path I bet you are wishing you was a ‘six month prepper’. Many of these people are still in direr need and there is little to no help forth coming. And this was just a hurricane not a real live SHTF advent. And now six weeks later many of these people are lived just as they did 6 days after. How many of these people wished they had stored more? And the fact is most real major disasters are not 5-7 day events they are weeks and sometimes a couple of months. And a week or two preps is not going to get you though. Yet somehow some people just allow normalcy bias shape their view and not actual facts of what real life shtf is like. It’s not a weekend camping trip it is often a week’s long gulling and frustrating time in which most of the time you are doing without and what you have and what you can get is never as much as you need.

Non religious Jews make fun of religious Jews and scorn them -— because we make them feel bad just by doing what they k ow they should be doing.

You KNOW those grasshoppers probably mocked those ants all summer long.

Also...

The establishment prepper movement does not like any movement that is outside of their control, and the prepper movement establishment is definitely not under their control.

Back in the 70's and 80's, preppers were known as "survivalists", and were shunned as wacko's then too. Today, we have TV shows like "Doomsday Preppers" to make us look like fools.

Some people never learn....

They’re demonizing preppers like Stalin demonized the Kulaks, and they want (if not intend) to treat preppers the same way. Which, for those who don’t know, involved seizing and kicking them off their land and then killing them.

Have you noticed that it has become trendy to bash preppers? For a long time the prepper movement was ignored, but now it has become so large that it is getting very difficult for the mainstream media to pretend that it is not there.

?????????????????????????
?????????????????????????

It looks like just the opposite to me. For a long time survivalists* were seen as a joke -- or as threatening and menacing. Katrina and Sandy** have brought home to a lot of people just how important it is to be prepared for disaster. Some post-apocalyptic television shows like The Walking Dead and Falling Skies (partially) turn old stereotypes on their head (only partially, but survivalists aren't portrayed as negatively as they were in the past).

* No, I won't say "preppers."

Even the FEMA website tells us to prepare and gives quite a few suggestions of kits and so forth.

Of course I already knew the government was nuts.
