Have you noticed that it has become trendy to bash preppers? For a long time the prepper movement was ignored, but now it has become so large that it is getting very difficult for the mainstream media to pretend that it is not there. In fact, it has been estimated that there are now approximately 3 million preppers in the United States alone. So now the mainstream media has decided that mocking the movement is the best strategy, and lots of critics and skeptics out there have picked up on this trend. Instead of addressing the very real issues that have caused millions of Americans to prepare for the worst, those criticizing the prepper movement attempt to put the focus on individual personalities. They try to find the strangest nutjobs they possibly can and then hold them up as typical preppers. The goal is to portray preppers as tinfoil hat wearing freaks that need to be locked up in the loony bin for their own personal safety and for the good of society. The criticism of preppers has really ramped up in recent months, and it will likely get even worse in 2013. The establishment does not like any movement that is outside of their control, and the prepper movement is definitely not under their control.

Preppers’ PING!!
Noah was mocked and vilified too.
“Why Are Preppers Hated So Much?”
Easy - armed white men scare the sh#% out of liberals. They hate armed white men more than AIDS. So they use the same tactic they use against birhers- ridicule.
Delusions only last so long after reality strikes.

If they prepped more and talked less, maybe nobody would notice them — and, isn’t that the idea?
I have a hunch that the best preppers are the ones no one knows about when the SHTF.
At least they prep with their own money.
Apparently because we just play with toys.... /S
Obviously, Preppers are hated because they are not relying on the Government for anything
Even GOP Liberals hate the Preppers....although have no problem taking ads from Prepper food and supply companies.
Noah has a similar problem.
Remember the quote “there’s no way to rule innocent men...”?
Goes for self-sufficient men too. Can’t manipulate someone you can’t get leverage on.
Nailed it
My guess is that we scare them because we don’t need Government to ‘save’ us - from what is usually Government-induced disasters in the FIRST place!
Prep on! :)
No, it's not the idea. The idea is to encourage communities to prepare themselves for disasters.
I've never lived my life skulking around. This is the US. I'll speak up to educate those that are interested. Anyone doesn't like it can lump it.

We can friggin' tie knots, start fires, patch the wounded, house the shelterless, warm the cold and eat pretty good too.
My husband’s brother lives in Wichita, Kansas and when he built his home he had a bomb shelter installed that could be accessed from the basement but that also had an outside exit. His neighbors laughed at him for having a bomb shelter. When the tornado swept through the neighborhood this past April Evan and his family came through it just fine in the shelter. They also had a ready-made place to live while they repaired the damage to their house.
Some of their snarky neighbors aren’t around anymore to hear them say, “I told you so.”
Ditto with the preppers. Maybe they’re wrong and nothing will happen. So then what’s the harm? To me they are no different than people who buy fire extinguishers: you buy it because you might have a fire, not because you’re crazy and paranoid.
I downplay prepping, 'just have a little extra'...
I'm just as concerned about some of the parasitic family members as the zombie hordes. What they don't know won't hurt me.
The author’s thesis is that preppers are hated because they make non-preppers question their assumptions about their faith in the system, which makes them uncomfortable. I think that’s true, but I also think that’s incomplete.
Prepper’s are also hated because prepping is an outward sign of self-sufficiency, i.e., an expression of a person’s willingness to give up his stake in the system. The prepper says, “I am prepared for the worst, and as a result, while I don’t wish misfortune on you, I don’t much care whether your system fails.” That scares the bejeezus out of the typical liberal - the noting that strong-willed, independent, productive people are willing to unplug themselves from their system. Prepping is a essentially an expression of the willingness to “go Galt”, and those who depend on others for their existance find that prosepect terrifying.
