Northeast FReepers who were affected by Sandy, please check in here when/if you have power to let us know your status. Tell us what, if anything, you need so we can organize help or get help to you. If you can, share your story with us. Tell us how you weathered the storm, what the condition is of your house or property, loved ones, pets, neighbors, etc.

You're in our thoughts and prayers. If we can help in any way, let us know!

“I think our local (Conn) power companies suck at restoring power, had 630K w/o power the day of the storm and still have 345K w/o power.”

When restoring power, all people are not equal. Lines to hospitals are first to save lives, next is lines to EMS service, fire stations and law enforcement, then government and on down the most important list. I was without power for five days after Ike. My section of town came back before others due to the fire department, sheriff's department and county government being in this close area. A water facility isn't far from me, either.

If one is in a rural area, you are fairly far down the list.

“When we lost electricity for three weeks after Rita all the highlines had been knocked down and had to be repaired—approx 70 miles of it— as well as the local lines brought down by trees.”

I was without power three days due to Rita. However, counties with many trees were down a long time. It knocked down zillions of trees in the Sam Houston National Forest and towns/counties near it were without power that three weeks you are talking about.

After Ike and out of power for five days, when it came back on, it was glorious - celebration time. I also recall I was afraid it would go off again any minute - I didn't trust it to stay on. After a few hours, I thought maybe it will stay on. Sleeping that night was better than sleeping with a battery powered fan on the table next to the bed. However, without those battery fans, life would have been much harder.

I evacuated! I'm in Jasper and Rita hit us hard...looked like a war zone. My mother was bedridden and we had to get out fast when Rita turned and headed our way. A tree fell on her BR so it was a good thing we were gone.

We were evacuated for Ike as well but that was not as bad here. My SIL's parents lived in Houston and were w/out power for 2 weeks after Ike.

As bad as 98 degrees/humidity is without AC, I guess it beats 32 degrees without heat.

Your comprehensive coverage (if you carry it on your auto policy) will cover the current “value” of your vehicle minus the deductible.

PINGING THE OHIO LIST

We lost power around 2 or 3 AM, and have an electric sump pump in the basement. (It pumps water from the footer drain to an outside drain.)

Later that morning I found a company that rents generators and he had two, so we were able to have the pump working by noon.

My neighbor told me tha O’Rilley auto parts (in Eastlake) was bringing in a truck load of generators, and I was lucky to buy a 5000/6000 watt generator sight unseen, it now is in the garage and I may start to assemble it this weekend.

We had 1 inch of water above the floor by our bottom stair, and about 2 or 3 inches by the low end where the sump is.

Power came back on around 3:15 in the afternoon, and the cleanup started.

(About 10 years ago, we had the same thing happen, what a mess then, and now!)

Thank God that we only lost a few old items!

IF you have a sump pump, it's almost a necessity to have a portable generator. When the power is most likely to go out, it's almost CERTAINLY gonna be raining in NE Ohio (I have a sump pump here, too).

I actually have 2 sump pumps installed, with one being a backup to the other. I don't want the hassle of those 12V battery powered little sump pumps, as it's not gonna get the job done in a monsoon, nor is it gonna work for days with the battery dead.

Thanks, fatima, for checking in. So glad to hear that your place on the shore survived just fine.

And really good to hear that your work place didn’t flood.

Prayers for your daughter, SIL, and family. Are you taking care of the kids?

It sounds as if you’ll be shipshape soon! Great job getting the genny. I’ve been nagging Hubby, and now’s a good time for me to really lay it on!

Hmmmm. To my surprise, the sun’s position in this image checks out for a date near summer solstice. Of course, it still looks fake, and snopes.com credits the storm shot to Mike Hollingshead, taken in Nebraska on 28 May 2004.

Actually I was thinking the same thing when I heard that.

That’s why some people stand a popsicle upright in the freezer in their vacation home - if the the popsicle has melted and refrozen in the bottom of the wrapper then it’s gotten warm in there - cheap sensor.

That's a Florida Hurricane trick too... Thanks for the reminder... You're in my prayers - glad you're OK....

I’m fine. I am physically and mentally hard as nails. I worry about the elderly and weak. The gas shortage is going to create chaos soon.
